Ok, this isnt a full on rig.

Its a test of a "short rig" holding the camera out about 30cm from the car.
I intend to strap it to a Drift car in a couple of days, still got to figure out the correct shutter speed (as the cars will be travelling 80-140kph, im going to start at 1/60)

anyway - heres the pics
the Rig
I realise there is a little softness in the big pic, as i stuck the lower pump cup to the bumper, and not the metalwork
(2x Manfrotto Pump Cups, 2x Magic arms, 1 plate, 1x superclamp, 1Dmk4 and Sigma 10-20 - triggering by a Modified Phottix remote and an extension cable with a button in the car)

and the Car pic (RX Impreza hatch)

Any comments or criticism ?

and the Phottix remote mod - i pulled it apart, added a 3.5mm Stereo Jack.
if it has a mono plug plugged in it acts as a Prerelease (for a pocketwizard)
an absolute nightmare of a mod, but i will do it again, i need another couple (and i will take pics of the mod steps next time)

Yea, when i stick it to the drift car the Safety cables will be an Integral part of what i do
im planning on at least 3

i didnt put them on this time, as i only intended to back it up and down the drive a few times (then drove it up 300m up the street)

you know the point of drifting is to get as close to the wall as possible, sometimes hitting it. something about your camera being between a 3k lb car and an immovable wall seems less than ideal. also be mindful that the front tires will throw stuff from the road back through turns.

If you know for sure your camera will be higher than the highest barrier, and you can throw a UV filter on the front of the lens - go for it (and post pics here!). Oh, look into insurance on your gear, that will make you sleep better. Attached to my homeowners policy, its ~$100/year to insure $12k for a no questions asked replacement

Camera is insured, UV and Polarising filters will be used, last time I ran a remote camera it was on the "wheel of death" at the circus, I don't put my camera in places where it is going to be damaged, with safety cables this is an acceptable risk to me (biggest danger is a rollover)

It's not actually a competition, otherwise I wouldn't be putting the camera on (and although I have spoken to the organizers, they may still say NO)
and the track walls are 12m from the track edge - there is 3m of gravel, and 9m of soft sand between the track and the walls.

unless you intended on doing this with 2 cars, one with camera and one right beside it, i dont know about strapping a camera on a drift car...b/c you will essentially get the same image you have above but with smoke...but i duno, thats just my opinion, ofcourse i would love to see what it actually ends up looking like

Being a big drift fan, the fun in it is seeing the car slide sideways on the track. I don't think this is particularly the best angle for it, but the rig is nice and I'd like to see the pics you get from it.

Stanclark - option 1 is my old 350d, or 1dmk1, I want the IQ I'm going to get from the MK4
I don't intend to break the camera, I'm planning on 3 safety cables, to stop the gear hitting the track, and the back tyre.
It will be on a track with one other car, at the other end of the track.

RadAL - thanks, I was going to start low, and work up if I get a chance to make adjustments.

SteveMG - I am planning a multiple car shot, but it won't be with the rig setup like this.
What i want to do, is get a pic of my mate's car, that he is selling soon, with the back tyres smoking, sideways before the corner, and with the road stretching out into the distance
So it will look like this, but the road will be blurred sideways, not like the car is turning.
I will post pics when Im done

Aemravan - that's the idea, to show smoke and movement.
If I get the chance I will do the 2 car shot too.

Will hopefully have pics to post tommorow night - the organizers have OKed it, providing they deem the mounts secure and ok to use

Ok I had a go at strapping the camera to a drift car.
Due to the fiberglass bonnet and front wings I had to use the suction caps on the windscreen and door, and the camera was too far back.
The Gopro captured some good video of a battle though (forgot to plug the Pocketwizard back in)

2 weeks ago I went and put my Mk4 on a Evo10 - a test day a few days before a rally
We then went for a blast through the bush - I don't know exactly how quick we were going, but I believe it to be around 140-150kph (nearly 100mph) thought the quick open bits.
(the car/crew are currently leading the Australian Rally Championship)

It turned out great
Ok so it took 300 frames to get one good one - but my boss loved it

More safety cables and gaffa tape than you can poke a stick at.

If I was doing it again (and I will try something similar again) I would use 3 or 4 suction caps/magic arms as there was too much play forward and backward.

Any comments or criticism ?
