Here are a few Cyclocross photos I took last October...
All photos have either 1 or 2 off-camera flashes. These are all SOOC, no editing whatsoever. I didn't even crop them (obviously!) or anything. I accidentally took 400 JPEG photos that race day- ooops. I must have shot JPEG instead of RAW the day before and now that's a setting I always check.
These 2 are with the nifty fifty:

These 2 are with the 70-300 IS USM (non-L):

I wouldn't say I'm particularly proud of these- I used the day more for OCF practice than anything else. I had just gotten the flashes and I was trying to figure out how to adjust them to meet my needs.

I wanted to shoot more races but it wan't in the cards for me this year.

Criticism invited.

bump the flash power or the exposure? I wanted to keep a good separation between the subject and the BG so I purposefully left a little off the BG. In hindsight I probably should have raised the BG a little. I tried pretty hard to trap the subject against a darker section of the BG so I'll probably do that again but raise the exposure.

I agree 100%. I'm not sure why I posted these versions. I was bored at work and I had these photos with me. Here is a version I just made. I like this one much better- I never should have posted the other version.

And here's another one. This guy drove a looong way to the race. He DNF'ed (because of a mechanical, that is why he's walking over the barriers) on the first lap... his expression is very telling!
