Once a year a heap of us RC nerds go flying in Victoria, fly by day, drink and talk crap by night, repeat

This Blanik spans 4 meters, is hollow moulded and was completely scratch built from 3 views. Weight is around the 12KG mark. There were 3 of them built for the week, two in Redbull scheme, one unpainted. The unpainted one smeared itself across a hill when it succumbed to aileron flutter due to a loose linkage

Plenty of large scale planes over the week. This is another 4 meter ship, ASW 28...I think.

When the wind dies down DLG is the go. You launch them discus style and the idea is to work thermals. Very light planes, 200 grams is getting heavy, very expensive for the euro planes, but are strong enough to be flung to almost 200ft from a good launch. Pity I chopped the tip in this launch

Token sunset silhouette shot. The sunsets were pretty special for a couple of evenings

This is only a small glider, prob 30" span, and using the 11-16 tokina the pilot had to pretty much fly a few inches above me. It's a tad blurry, but I like it, even with the funky Tokina flare.

I had only just gotten my 135L for the trip and used it after the sun went down. What an amazing lens, being able to shoot at 500th (F2 @ISO 320) after the sun goes down over the horizon was a new experience for this old F5.6 guy!

Then after it gets black and a few ales have been consumed, it's back down to the point for some night flying. This particular plane is an electric flying wing full of LEDS. Being made of foam they bounce very well, but with a well designed light setup, it's actually reasonably easy to keep orientation in total darkness. Combat was had with a few of them later on, but those photos are just a mess of lights.

Very nice set. We don't seem to have any good slope sites in my area so I haven't experienced that style of flying. Also agree on the Tokina shot, flare & all.

Cool shots. I fly RC and sometimes I also try to shoot them. It's not as easy as one would think.

I took a similar shot a few years ago while flying over a frozen lake, nowhere near as nice as yours, but I did catch some rare light pillars.

Glad you enjoyed them everyone.

Cygnusx1: Neat photo! sorry for my ignorance, but what are light pillars?

yes they can be difficult suckers to shoot that's for sure. Added hassle with slope soaring is it is windy, it has to be, so not only do you have something very small traveling very fast, it's blowing over 40 knots on a real good day! Both you and the plane are being bounced around. I try not to spray and pray, but admit to doing it sometimes just to get the guy a sharp shot of his plane.

One of the hardest shots I got was this one below. It was blowing a solid 40+ knots and there is nowhere to get out of the way of the wind at this particular site. It's not the "best" shot I did over the weekend, but I know it was a hard sucker of a shot to get, and I got it not "spraying and praying"

48" span, has a cruise speed of about 60MPH, probably top out in a dive at around 90 mph, it's what is commonly referred to as a "lead sled" 1/350th at 400mm standing on top of a hill in howling winds, and it still took a fair crop to bring it in a bit.

oh, and another thing a slope flyer has to contend with is birds of prey not taking kindly to you sharing their sky. In this case a Wedge tail eagle took this guys plane out from the same weekend Eagle 1- plane 0

Wow, those are amazing, beautiful work! That last shot of the first set (light show) is especially stunning.

Also - LOL at the eagle shot

Great shots on both the eagle & Futaba plane. I know someone flying a foam Woody Woodpecker like plane that also gets attacked by birds.

I really should put more into getting back into RC planes. Learning to fly a rc heli right now. Unfortunately flight fields are few and far between here unless you like dealing with stuck up old men who get bent out of shape when someone younger has a bigger, faster plane. Too many issues I had with the old RC club fliers locally when I flew ducted fans.

Awesome shots Paul.
I used to do slope soaring years ago and had to contend with wedgies .
Then again with planes and helis out in the desert region with wedgies and Kites plus the odd pigeon :o
