Can anyone recommend me a ND or better filter that would help me more safely photograph welding? We do a lot of welding at my work, and I'd love to get some shots of it in action. Also tips to avoid damage to the sensor and my eye would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading

Have you tried holding a sheet of Welding Glass up in front of your lens?

Here are a few that should do what you want. I have the Hoya and Lee
filters, have been quite satisfied with both. And the B+W filters are
highly rates.

Hoya ND400
B+W ND 3.0
B+W ND110
Lee Big Stopper

I have not done it with digital but I have several years ago with 35mm and I just used an 8 shade glass. (for the record, we were using the smaw process) I do not believe the welding light is as bright or concentrated as laser light (especially through welding glass) which is know to ruin sensors so someone else would have to speak to that.

I've done video and stills with DSLR using a piece of 8 shade glass or better. Shoot raw, underexpose a little.

There's a whole thread running around here, somewhere, about making your own ND out of welding glass.

Otherwise, the retail ones that Evan mentions, plus the Hi-Tech Pro Stop ought to get you rolling.
