I'm looking for a nd filter that I can use during the daytime in sunny conditions for water but as well as during sunset and sunrise as well, so I guess a variable nd is needed? Or am I better off getting two separate nd filters (not sure which size stop to purchase)..I am looking to use them on my tokina 11-16mm lens which has a 77mm filter size and as well on my sigma 30mm, so I plan on getting 62-77mm step up ring to avoid having to spend even more. Is it wiser to get a variable nd or two separate ones? Will there be vignetting on 11mm?

Its a lot cheaper to buy two then it is to buy one variable ND filter. A Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo in Thin Ring Mount cost $440.00 plus shipping.

If you are looking for a filter to hold back the sun during sunrise and sunset, an ND filter or a variable ND filter will not do the job...for that, a graduated neutral density filter will be needed. Your question wasn't clear with regard to sunrise/sunset, so this is my assumption.

Check out LightCraftWorkshop ND filters. i have Their ND500 9 stop filter and love it! I have read variable filters on wide angle lenses produce mixed results, so I opted for the single density. No color cast and a lot more affordable.
