I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8. I shoot mostly sports and a lot indoors. I have a 50D and am thinking about getting the Canon 24-70 2.8. It's $1299 after instant rebate. Who wants to push me over the edge so I buy it? :D

for sports, why not get a 100mm+ focal length?

I use my 70-200 for when I have the room, I need something wider on the baseline at basketball games. The Sigma doesn't seem to keep up focus wise.

Doubtful, new one is $2300, current is $1300 after rebate, $1000 difference...the Mark II will, at best, lose about 5% of its value in a year based on market trends (Citing the 15-85 IS and 70-200 f/2.8L IS) making it about $2185 or so...

Stocks on the original will run out so you cant get a new one anymore, used copies will probubly appreciate in value, probubly to the $1300-1400 level...People will still pay it because its still a large savings over a brand new Mark II....

Similar thing happened with the Mark 1 70-200 f/2.8 IS....They're worth roughly what you could get a new one for now a days...

Basically, if you're contemplating the 24-70, Get the thing NOW, if the Mk2 comes out and rocks your socks enough you must have it, you'll probubly get back 95-98% of what you just paid for your mark 1... Very safe purchase in my book

-edit- also in regards to vs the Sigma, Sure, same focal range, but the OP seems to use it frequently and wants better AF, the 24-70L will give him the best AF performance you can get, I'm not sure the 35L or any similar prime will give the same AF performance...and that is a key consideration here

Unless the Tamron with IS comes out, and is at least as good as the Mk I. Then the price drops.

Still doubt it, The Mk1 will stay up there for a while, even when the Tamron launches..

Simply put while the Tamron is potentially awesome, its not a Canon, and its not an L, Look at the prices of some of the long discontinued L glass... such as the Mighty Drainpipe 80-200 f/2.8L which routinely sells for $800... You can get good copies of the 70-200 f/2.8L USM for $900-1000... which is a better lens....

Canon glass, especially L glass, just holds onto its value...
