So I am finally close to pulling the trigger and buying some studio equipment, after lots of reading I think I have decided on AlienBees - so am I missing anything? am I completely insane with my selection(with my selections)? This would all just be used for hobby work, studio shots of my daughter and her friends(dance etc), tired of paying insane prices for crappy shots provided at schools and studios, when I know I can do as well with some( LOTS of) time and effort.

If you can afford to spend that and not make money from it, why not.

Seems like a bit of overkill to me. Grab a used strobe or two off the forum, see if its what you're end to before taking a $2500 jump.

I agree. I don't know what your work is like as your website is all password protected....which seems a little odd....but that's your choice.

I tend to buy equipment when I find I can't accomplish what I want with what I have. Seems to me, and I certainly could be wrong, that you are loading up on hardware hoping to grow into it, so to speak.

Here again, as mentioned above, if have the money to do this without taking food off your table then carry on.

Everything on the site is private shoots for a local Equity theater, all live performances and the actors are all Equity performers so there are copyright issues. Lighting wise I am totally at the mercy of the lighting tech and director.

Money is not an issue as this is just hobby dollars don't need to nor intend to make money at it, "grow into it" would be the plan, but I will spend the time shooting and working on getting there.

Here are a couple shots from the last show "Hairspray"

CurlyDog.. why don't you rent a few high speed primes (1.2 or 1.4) and see if they provide you with results you are seeking before getting those toys. Having the light is fun but if they don't allowed you to add them to the set then... but the lights are so much fun!
