Got a chance to take my new 24 f/1.4 out for a spin Thursday night-I like it a lot! These are from South Valley Open Space near Denver.

First 4 had some extra light added with a small flashlight, the last one was ambient light only. (Light pollution is good for something, I guess.) Taking after-dark landscapes was one of the main reasons I bought the 24L: wide angle starscapes with no star trailing at fairly low ISOs.

Wow! Gorgeous images. Makes me want one. I might actually see how much harder it is to use a 1.8 and at least figure out this kind of stuff on a nifty fifty? Can I do that?

Beautiful.

I've shot a lot of night stuff with a fast 50...these two were both shot at 50mm at f/1.6, ISO3200, 6 sec, on the 5DII:

These were helped by my location: Independence Pass, outside of Aspen (over 12,000 ft, and far away from light pollution)

This one was also done at 50mm, f/1.6, in Northern Minnesota.

I'm going to have to try this! :)

Beautiful, though. Wow.

What White Balance would be best for these type shots.

Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. KUDOS.

Have plenty of Canons, enough ammo, enough to blow 'em to "L". Now, I just have to learn to aim.

I find that white balance for these long exposures can be tough. Definitely shoot in RAW, so you have a lot of latitude during post processing. I usually start out with a tungsten setting in camera, and tweak it from there. The ideal sky would be jet black with just stars visible, but more often the light pollution will make the sky relatively light, so you'll want to adjust to make it a pleasing color.

My Lightroom settings for these were:
Color temp: 3150-3350
Tint: -5 to -7

I like them all but think 1 and 5 are really cool. I'd lighten some of the dark areas in 5 a tiny bit, but I like it as is.

Edit: one other comment. I'll be in Colorado this summer. I'm sure your shoot will cost me at least one night's sleep.

Thanks for the critique, frank! :)

Adam, I am really curious: You have both of Canon's best 24mm lenses, what prompted you to have two primes of the same focal lenght? I'd just enjoy learning your thought process on that. I happen to really the 24mm focal length and admit to being very attracted to the EF 24mm f/1.4L lens.
