I currently have a 5D2, Nifty fifty, and 135L

I'm hoping to get with some car clubs and get regular at shooting events with them. I'm not sur eif a 50mm and 135mm prime are going to be good for carshow type settings. I don't have any extra money at the moment. Wondering what good options I have if I were to sell the 135mm and/or the nifty and reconfigure my lenses to better suit cars. I hope I do get these clubs, so any help would be appreciated.

I have shot plenty of cars in the past, but with a crop body and 10-22mm. I loved the 10-22mm but I know that's not an option for the FF 5D2.

If you used the 10-22 a lot on crop I'd figured the 17-40L would be a good choice?

It doesn't make much difference. Any competent wide-angle lens will work.

The way the lens is used is as important as the choice of lens.

Those are all crop lens. I have a 5D2. But, I guess I could apply the same logic while staying in my budget.

I was going to say that all those lenses are crop only so are useless here, especially coming from crop. Always seems to post the exact same shots in all threads related to lenses and car shows.

Anyways, I recently shot the Canadian International Auto Show here in Toronto, and I used only the 24-105L and the 135L. I found the 24-105 to be an awesome, flexible lens for cars as I could get the whole car in the frame as well as zoom in for closer cropped photos. I used my 135L for detail and shallow DoF shots. The problem with a 17-40 over the 24-105 would be that you would get alot more distortion at the wider end of 17, where as at 24, there is not that much distortion. The equivalent of the 10-22 on the 5D is the 16-35 but that is a pretty expensive lens. The 17-40 is the cheapest, and the 24-105 is in second place.

From my experience, I shot a auto show with my 50D and 50mm, so thats an equivalent focal length of about 85 on a 5D, and I had to step back quite a bit to get the whole car in the frame, but otherwise that combo was amazing for detail and up close shots.

If I were to shoot the show again, I would be perfectly fine with only a 50mm, all I would have to do is step back a bit to get the whole car in the frame, which may be a but challenging with people moving around. Anyway, here are some of the shots I took with the 24-105 and 135 combo.

The same question has been asked repetitively in this forum in recent weeks.

Thanks for that DC Fan. But, only 2 of those threads have the word lens/lenses in the title. The rest are pretty vague and didn't match anything I would've searched for.

I found someone on craigslist that had a 24-70mm F/2.8 L and wanted to trade for an L prime. So, my 135L + $100 cash and I now have a minty 24-70mm. Figure in that I paid $2,000 for the 5D2 & 24-105mm. Then even trade for the 135L. I'm still at $2,100 for a 5D2 and 24-70mm. Not bad I think!
