Okay so I saw fungus in a used lens I just purchased recently and don't know what to do. The nifty fifty has been on my 5D2 right now for 1 day overnight and in the bag with my 16-35L. Does my 5D2 and 16-35 now suffer from the fungus too? I have them all separated right now in my room...I never had this problem before and the search on "fungus" nobody seems to have a real answer on how to fix it or what to do. I tried to contact Canon earlier and didn't get thru, so I'm kinda frantic right now. Is this repair expensive? Should I get rid of the lens...what to do? :S

I'm feeling a bit sick knowing I put a fungus lens on my 5D2..

Firstly take the lens back and get a refund.

It is unlikely any fungus spores will have gone from it to your camera/other lens. Lens fungus doesn't like light so the best thing you can do is put your 16-35 on your 5D2 and go out and take pics, or leave it where light will shine through the lens. Leave the bag out in a bright sunny place if possible.

Fungus likes damp, dark & warm conditions to grow in so just avoid leaving your camera equipment in such a place.

Currently Using - Fujifilm X-E1 | XF 18-55 f/2.8-4 R OIS || Bodies Owned - Canon 1DS II | 5D MKII | 7D | 50D's | 40D's | 450D | 350D | Lenses Owned - Canon 17-40 f/4L | 24-70 f/2.8L | 24-105 f/4L IS | 70-200 f/2.8L IS MKII | 70-200 f/4L IS | Sigma 85 f/1.4 | Many other lenses and film bodies/lenses.

Yes I will get rid of the lens one way or another; but how is it possible my 16-35L caught it? It was just in the same bag with both caps on ..but I will go shooting tomorrow to help out the camera. I've got a shipment of silica gel packets coming home before I place them all back into the bag. Currently, it is sitting on my computer desk and it is freezing cold in my room, dry not moist or warm...I feel like I had a heart attack but this sucks..thanks for the quick reply though; I also just learned that we are always covered in fungus. :x

It's about a 1mm white haired line and it's on the rear element. It doesn't affect any of the pictures actually, I didn't notice it til I took it off the 5D to swap to the 16-35L. :S

Guess it's my fault for assuming it's a scratch rather than fungus (first encounter for me).

Are you certain it's fungus?
Is it possible that it's just a small thread of lint?

if it's just one line, i'd almost think it is a scratch, or hair, and not fungus...i dunno...i recently noticed something in my 50mm MK I...not sure what it is exactly....there's no effect to images, and i'm not worried about it somehow infecting my other lenses, because of where i live isn't a fungus hot spot...i just go about like it's not even there...

Here's what it looks like, I also now see some white circle dots in the lens if you stare hard.

I'm going to stay-tuned... maybe fungus lens pictures I've seen have been much worse than this - it doesn't necessarily look like a fungus lens to me. ???

I like to push buttons on thingies that take pictures. Sometimes I like to push other buttons, too.

Oddly enough,it looks like a chip in the glass. Is that even possible to happen on the inside of a lens?

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

Sorry it is visibly white and not black ..just like Ed said, it is inside the glass and not on the outer surface at all. I don't know how it is either.

I can see the white spots on the edges, but I thought fungus was this feathery-patterned type thing that covered your lenses...? I thought that I saw a chip too, but since it wasn't part of the discussion - is the chip looking thing where the fungus is?

Hard to tell from the picture, not saying yes or no. I never seen lens fungus look like that so far? It's always fury looking lol. How's it look if you shine a flashlight through it.

Hard to tell from that picture what it is, could be a fibre of some kind or could be fungus.

I trade, repair and service classic lenses as a hobby and see a lot of fungus. I also service and repair some of the newer lenses and fungus does come in all shapes and sizes, but so do lose fibre particles.

If you can take a shot with light shining through the opposite end of the lens and tilt the lens so that the object is question is againt the inner body of the lens, it will probably be easier to see what it is.

And yes it can easily be on the inner elements of your lens.

Got to say these newer fangled lenses don't have pretty fungus, here is one with fungus that looks almost crystal like and has a large amount of spores in the lens
