So, I posted my 30D on Craigslist. Got first Nigerian scam e-mail almost immediately. Here are our email communications:

Nigerian: Well i will like to buy if still pristine and also available

Me: Yes, the camera is still available. Where are you located? When would you like to meet? Thanks. (I'm thinking this will end it, but of course I am wrong)

Nigerian: Thanks for getting back to me,I am delighted hearing from you that
your item is still available for sale,I saw the description of your item on craigslist.org and it's match my searching demand. i am seriously interested in buying your item.My name is Michelle Scott located in Vergas, Nevada, I'm buying your item because i wanna give it to our pastor as a present. Please i'm unable to pick up the item by my self because of my work schedule. I have calculated the shipping cost and am gonna include it during the payment of your item.

Please send me a pay pal invoice to enable me made the payment right away. Or do you prefer Money Order? if so kindly provide me with the below requirement for the payment to be made immediately.

> (1) Full Name:
> (2)Home Address:
> (3)Phone number:

Me: I'm sorry, but I just sold the camera to a very nice Nigerian prince who was buying it for his son. Hopefully you'll be able to find something nice for your pastor. Maybe a fondue set or a an ipad would be good. (I'm sure this will be the end of it)

Nigerian: okay i need ipad please if you still have ipad i will like to buy it.

Me: I'm sorry, but I only have the fondue set. It comes with six forks, though one is a bit bent from when my buddy Larry got wasted and fell off the high bar stool while we were doing a chocolate dip with mini pound cakes (which are super-yummy, btw). I would be happy to sell this for $200 + $75 for shipping, if you are interested.

Nigerian: okay send me with your PayPal invoice so that i will be able to send
you a payment today asap.

Seriously?!? The worst part is I don't even have a fondue set. Now it seems I am the scammer...

Any creative ideas for follow up?

My apologies to any Nigerians who may be reading this. I know that most of you are not scammers, but unfortunately your nationality has gotten associated with Craigslist scams, and I am not feeling so PC tonight. :)

Ha, you ought to see what I've been dealing with trying to sell BNIB 5D2 and 70-200/2.8 IIs on CL. It's a waste of time and I got tired of playing with Nigerians years ago.

Get them to send the money, and then oops, the fondue set got lost in transit.

I wanna know if they'll actually send the money!

A friend was selling a car on CL , and had some "nigerian" scammers try to buy it , whole deal , they wanted him to drop it off for shipping somewhere and they would send a money order...

he told them to send a MO to his address , which he gave as the address to the Local FBI office :)

when I list stuff on craigslist, i get like 10 scam emails... their attempts are pretty lame usually.. i hope no one is fooled by them, but apparently they have some success otherwise they would've stopped long ago..

They never mention the item you're selling. For example if you're selling a 5D2 the messages are something like "if your item is still available I would like to buy it. Please send me a PayPal invoice and ship it to my grandmother".

A scammer should be referred as just scammer, not as a reference to a particular country. People, please do not use "nigerian" when you meant "scammer". They are not synonymous.

Ahh, lads.

Some fun reading about them at www.thescambaiter.com (external link) if you have a couple days you need to kill. I've actually gone back and re-read some myself. The best ones are done by a guy who calls himself theFailure. He runs the site and has shipped literally tons of dead weight to scammers around the world. Check it out. Although some of it is NSFW, so be aware.

(Disclaimer - No affiliation with the site. I'm just a guy who spent weeks reading all the entertaining stories they have over there!)
