ECU vs. Milwaukee baseball

Not too happy with the set personally but thats just me. The 100-400L seemed a little softer than I was expecting and I was too close to use my 300L so I stuck with the 100-400.

It was my first baseball game so I'm all for some C&C on these. Couldn't really find a PP that I liked so they are all different, which isn't always a good thing.

With baseball I try to get the ball in every photo, not always practical. I also find myself trying to stop the action to prevent blurred shots, somewimes blur is a good thing. Most of your shots show the ball and the action. They look pretty good to me. The only thing you might try to change in the future is try stop down further to blur the backround. If you already had the lens wide open I guess there is nothing you can do. Keep up the good work.

Some of these were shot at f/6.3 but the others were at f/5.6 and that was wide open for the 100-400L. Would have really liked to use my 300L but I was just too close and the 70-200 wasn't enough reach for even the other side of the infield so I ran into problems there.

Thank you for the feed back and the compliments. Hopefully I can get the 300 to work for me next game.

Could you explain further why you thought you were too close for the 300? Most of the guys I know who shoot baseball do it with a 70-200 and a 300 or 400. You can move farther down the baselines in order to make it work. Your photos look fine, not sure what you don't like about them.

We are required to be in the dugouts and not on the baseline. So I was all the way at the end of the away dugout as far from the plate as I could get to try and use the 300. It was just too close for the plate. I needed about 250mm for the plate so even the 70-200 didn't reach to where I wanted it too. We have plenty of baseball games so I'm sure I'll figure out where I can use the 300 better but we will see.

The main reason I am not happy I think is because I missed a few of the "moments" of the game. And by missed I mean I got them, but they weren't good enough for me to put in my portfolio whether they were just OOF or something like that. I'm happy with the 17 that I got but 17 keepers out of close to 400 pictures isn't good. Granted there were a lot of duplicates that got deleted but we'll see which ones get printed.

Missing moments is just part of the game, no pun intended LOL. You'll miss less and less the more you shoot games. Is there no chance for you to move anywhere down the baseline? Is it just the dugout or nothing? We play a couple of games at the local minor-league park and they have photog pits which is nice.

Yup it's just the dugout or behind the annoying mesh that stretches all around the infield. No down the baselines for me.

I've got mesh as well but I just shoot through it. Is that possible for you?

Those are some great shots. How do you like the 300mm f4? I'm thinking of picking one up for soccer season. Also interested in the 100-400 but I hear it's soft at the top end.

I know you didn't ask me, but just for a frame of reference, I'll post a few taken with the 100-400. The 300 is nice and very sharp, but the 100-400 isn't terrible by any means. The cropped version is the very next frame in the sequence after the uncropped shot. I couldn't find the uncropped version of the shot, but you can get the idea.

I think I inadvertently cropped the master is what happened.

Didn't get to shoot it at this game so the next one I will be able to see how well it does.

Thank you for the examples and the hints, I'll have to play around with it some more.
