The corn snake photo is awesome. Great detail, and excellent control of the shadows.

I enjoy this type of photography - critters with a stark/plain background. It emphasizes the details of the critters.

If I may offer a suggestion... Get yourself a cheap pop-up light tent. It will soften/diffuse the light so you do not get the hotspots, and will all but eliminate the shadows. An added bonus, since you're working with wild-caught critters, is that they seem to feel more "safe" when they're "hidden" in the light tent.

The salamander is really cool too. I'd like to see more of it's eyes in focus, though. Maybe shoot it more from a 90degree angle so that more of the face/body are in focus.

Regards,
-Brandon

this was an unplanned shoot, I was going into this with plans to shoot on the white seamless, but due to space I only set up one flash, I use 2 a bit farther away and it works for getting it a bit less bright. I do want to look into a soft box for my flash. as for eyes in focus, the salamader was always on the move. heres a better focus on the eye.

ps, i also had the polerizer on but didnt get a good setting on it.. oops
