One of the reasons I visited the Everglades last month was to tour Stormwater Treatment Area 5, which has the reputation of having a great number of birds migrate through in the winter. We did see many birds, but on a severely overcast and windy day photography was not good. The ponds are so large birds are able to stay some distance from shore. Since hunting is allowed, and birders only get access one day a month, the birds are very skittish. Consequently, many photos were less than stellar. This one is posted only because I've never seen a fulvous whistling duck before, not even one posted here (I have seen black-bellied whistling ducks in several locations).

That's a great shot Stan and shows his surroundings nicely too. Sounds like an interesting place.

Congrats on that catch Stan! I am puzzled by the one day a month thing, Is hunting season all year? That just seems wierd for these days, one day a month.
Great shot by the way.

Thank you, Ian. A very interesting place, would be great to go there more often.

Thanks, Bret. I agree, and was shocked that hunting is allowed at all. Not sure of the schedule, but I think hunting is only certain days and certain months. The local Audubon Society has one day a month and organizes tours, which guarantees dozens of cars driving around the ponds.

Thanks much, Fee. Unfortunately, this place is so remote and distant from my home, I won't be going often. Would be better on a sunny day and with fewer people.
