Canon 450D - 3.5fps - I always shoot in 'One shot' because I'm primararily a landscape photographer, however, today had an opportunity to shoot my dog...

Used 1/800, f/4.0, 200mm, iso 400 (very overcast) ...... using Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS lens....

For this series I switched to AI Servo ...... I used the image stabilazition and laid on the grass supporting the camera with my elbows on the ground.. Can someone
help me understand what happened with these pictures ??? I thought I had held the camera fairly still..... these look as though I was doing jumpin jacks during the shoot !!

You may need to delve into your Custom Functions to insure that the AF settings are adjusted for your shooting style. Look in your manual or on the Canon Learning Center website. http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …icle.shtml?categoryId=121 (external link)

First, you should always try to have the EXIF info included in your images to give us a clue to where the problem originated. Using PS, "Save As" will include the exif & give a slightly larger file size. "Save For Web" strips the exif out.
EXIF info is in post #3: Using a Watermark / Copyright

Second, looking at #3 I see the grass it's on looks fairly sharp & it's in the center where your most active focus point is (should be! - check that.), & 1/800 sec should be enough to stop a dog running toward you. This makes me suspect the OS setting.

If it were me, I'd go out to the street & shoot some cars coming toward me at different OS settings & also at 1/800 - 1/2000 sec & evaluate what you get.

Looks to me in pics 3 and 4 that there is a patch of reasonably sharp focussed grass just behind the dog. Makes me think that the lens and camera were sufficiently steady but that the AF wasn't keeping up with the dog - at least that's what I've found with some of my pics. I'd go with a greater depth of field (ie smaller aperture) and trade that with either a slower shutter (1/400 should be ok) or higher ISO. F/4 on your lens at a longer focal length is a pretty thin depth of field.

Well, if you tried this "go out to the street & shoot some cars coming toward me at different OS settings & also at 1/800 - 1/2000 sec & evaluate what you get." & had no issues, then maybe your AF motors are slow as adrianSE suggested. I have a lens where the motor seems to be dying right now.

Rick, That looks everything is in move in your first pic. If the cam was really fairly still, as you wrote, than the IS is able to make resonance. So try to switch off the IS in similar cases. Anyway the short exposure time, what you used, does not justify the usage of IS.
