Problem with not having a credit card is....not building any credit. Believe me, it is a ****ing nightmare trying to build that up when you are refused credit cards. The day I was allowed a credit card over here, hello spending spree (just lunch once a week, pay it off, every week).

Otherwise, you'll never be granted a mortgage or get a car unless you have 100% of the money in cash (i.e. debit, paper cash etc.)

This is true, credit scores are calculated heavily based on the credit limits you have, how much (%) you spend each month, and for how long you've had your accounts open...

We don't need a mortgage anymore; our house is paid for.

No interest in moving in the future? Or even buying additional cars? Nothing wrong with that thinking, but it's nice to have a good credit score backing you up. I really have no idea how they rank credit scores for someone who doesn't keep CC's, period. I'm assuming that's unusual. This is America, land of the free, and home of the Credit Cards in every mailbox.

The Book of Moron. Assuming you can get tickets 2-3 months in advance. You may have to go back further.

There are better ways to build credit than credit cards... But yeah, in the end you still have to borrow money and then pay it back in order to be trusted with borrowing more. Credit scores do more harm than good to people who are actually fiscally responsible.

Well, hubby wants to buy a cattle ranch and move to it. I'm pushing to just try to buy a few hundred acres close to the family farm so his sons can run it for us. I don't think someone in their 60s should really embark on a new career as a cattle farmer.

I hope to never ever have to move again the rest of my life. I love my house, I love the little creek and its little bridge and the pond and our grape arbor and my berry bushes and my rhubarb patch, chicken house... why would I want to leave that?

Lombardi was really good and so was Chicago. Million Dollar Quartet was FANTASTIC!

As a reward for my GF's little brother finishing his junior high school interviews we are going to see Spider Man Turn off the dark on broadway. It smashed chicagos record for most revenue in its first 10 days  It has good reviews so will let you know when i get back from it.

This is true, credit scores are calculated heavily based on the credit limits you have, how much (%) you spend each month, and for how long you've had your accounts open...

Right...moving from the UK, the ****ing banks can't be arsed to do any legwork and use UK credit scores. so my score in the US was 0, as if I were a newborn :D

refused every possible card (couldn't hurt my credit score at that time). Eventually one small tiny credit union allowed me to tag on to one of my wife's accounts so I could get a CC. Then I was offered more and more. I have 2-3.

The trick is to buy something small and pay it off each week. The computer systems look at how often you are paying off your CC and how much you pay back. So if you clear it each week, you'll be looking good.

To keep my CCs in the UK active and in good shape, I subscribe to things like FT.com, I am charged weekly on the CC, but have it set up that my UK debit account pays off the CC each week. Everyone is a happy chap.

Don't be afraid of using your debit card, Jake.
