I just used this one, which is free (although paypal donations can be given)

you run it from your computer, but nothing is installed. Works a treat. I'm almost 25% through my camera (5d2) at 35,000 photos to date.

Thanks for finding this! Worked for my T1i and 5D3. I actually had downloaded the canon sdk a while back to write my own app to get the shutter count for myself, but have been too busy lately. Now I don't need to bother ;)

Posted this to your blog post Teaco:

Even though Shutter Count from http://www.shutteractuations.com (external link) is a Windows app it works perfectly on a Mac using Parallels/Windows 7. Does not work on Mac using CrossOver.

So I checked the shutter count of my Canon 5D MKII and my new Canon 5D MKIII with gPhoto2.
I took 53 pictures with my Canon 5D MKIII but gPhoto2 only registered a shutter count of 49.
Does anyone know what the reason for this might be ?

did you turn the camera off/on after you took the pics and before running the gphoto2 shutter count?

Ah, this is awesome. I wish I found this thread before it took me forever to find the shutter count with Magic Lantern.

Dexy101,

When you say "camera is reading" what do you mean? File name number or MagicLantern?

Sorry, I mean my shutter count is reading on Eos count as 15660. On my camera body it reads 5610 for the last image number that I took, plus the 10k on top. As the 5DmkIII only reads up to 9999 then goes back to 0001 but with a different folder number.

It could also be deleting the last shot taken. I've notice that if I delete the last shots taken on my 500D or 7D that the image numbering will pick up right after the highest numbered image left on the card.

For example: Lets say img_8714.cr2 is my last image taken, I delete everything from img_8700.cr2 to img_8714.cr2. The next picture I take will be numbered img_8700.cr2.

mine does not do that, even if I turn off the camera after deleting the shots.

Okay, I'm not sure how I came to that conclusion the first time, but I just checked both bodies and I'm totally wrong about what I said in my previous post.

Now I'm just baffled...
