This is a fairly new school with a really nice gym, but the lighting is ok, plus there were a bank of them blown out. I should've stayed at ISO 8000, but I did some experimenting.

Very nice. I too have been using iso 6400 with great results. It's pretty amazing when you think about it. I wonder how good the IdX is really going to be by comparison. It's hard to imagine it getting much better, but history has shown that it will.

From exif it looks like these were taken with 1D4 and (I'm guessing) 24-70 f/2.8. They look really good, very nice work :)

In some of those shots you are at 1/500th, with those photos still just a tiny touch overexposed, you can crank that sucker to 1/800th or 1/1000th and probably get a sharper shot.

Overall though, good work and don't be afraid of those high ISO's.

Thanks. I used the 70-200 2.8II lens for those shots. The 24-70 would be really nice down under the basket, but unless I find a cheap one, the 70-200 will have to do.

Groovehouse, when I use 800, it seems a bit underexposed. This was my 1st time at this gym and depending on which end of the court, because some lights were out, things got a bit tricky. SS 500 is the lowest I would go, but even there sometimes the ball is blury. I may go with SS 640 next time. Or I can go upto ISO 8000 - not sure.

Again thanks all

I'm not afraid either...I regularly shoot at ISO 6400 with a 1D Mark III. This was shot in a dark gym and with some slight tweaking yielded a great print.

Great shots Al, what noise reduction software are you using?

I use my 1D III at 6400 ISO frequently with acceptable results. I use 6400 ISO on my 5D II without thinking twice about it.

I do think the white balance is slightly off in the OP's pictures. A little warm, IMO.

Nice captures. Is this a HS gym? 640 @ iso 8000 that seems to be a really dark gym.
