Great shots!

What NR program do you use Pixel?

PixelMagic wrote in post #13950542 (external link)
I'm not afraid either...I regularly shoot at ISO 6400 with a 1D Mark III. This was shot in a dark gym and with some slight tweaking yielded a great print.

Is this who I think it is? If it is, Mike we've met at some of the games. We talked at the championship game Wednesday - Al.

For NR, I use LR3

Great shots Al, what noise reduction software are you using?

The Mk IV has been a great buy for me. You may get some decent deals when the Mk X comes out.

That Mk IV is what I want! Nice series.

The WB is straight from the WB card shot taken on the floor of the court (shot at 1/60). Whatever the WB card says is what I use, but the the Mk IV's AWB is never far off though - actually it's amazingly close to what the WB card reports.

I use my 1D III at 6400 ISO frequently with acceptable results. I use 6400 ISO on my 5D II without thinking twice about it. I have not used my 1D3 except for the 1st game I shot. The 1D3 AWB is way off when compared to the 1D4.

I do think the white balance is slightly off in the OP's pictures. A little warm, IMO.

Yeah the gym is fairly new and nice but they had a bunch of lights out and they are pretty high up, too. I've shot at another gym and at ISO 3200 (f2.8) I can get SS of 800 and when using my f2 lens, it's a photographer's dream. I shot another game this week at SS800. I will post them soon.

Nice captures. Is this a HS gym? 640 @ iso 8000 that seems to be a really dark gym.

Man, I will keep saying that a 24-70 would be sweet down low under the basket.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to check out my images and for your feedback.

What NR program do you use Pixel?

I've tried several noise reduction programs; Noise Ninja, Noiseware Professional, Neat Image, Dfine 2, and Topaz DeNoise 5. For years my favorites were Noiseware Pro and Dfine 2 but recently I've found that Topaz Denoise 5 cleans up high ISO noise like ISO 6400 better than any of the other programs without much blurring or smudging.

So for regular noise I'd use just about anything but for really stubborn high ISO noise I'd go with Topaz DeNoise; the photo I posted was cleaned up with it.

No, we've never met; I live in Wisconsin.

Do share how you conclude the difference between technical wb and creative wb, what kind of lights were in the gym and what kind of settings the photographer used to denote that the OP photos are "way off".

This. Either this or he's solidified in his head that all gymnasium sports photos must have the same wb...I never got the memo that these rules had to be followed that strict

today is a football match, the lighting of the stadium is bad, so i have to use minimum ISO 2500 or 3200 and can't get that high SS, so should i go up to ISO 6400???

I will shoot with MKIII + 300, i can use different NR softwares for better results.

Thanks. I wish all the gyms were like the home gym I shoot at where I can get 1/800 at ISO 3200.

Thanks. I'm glad LR3 does a pretty good job, which allows me to do everything in one program; save some money, too. I can only wonder how better LR4 will be if it has improved on the noise software.

Tareq, I know I am late, but yeah go to ISO 6400 if need be. Personally, I don't like flash football (soccer in your case). Link me to your images when you get them up. I'ld like to check them out.

Ok, did the football or soccer match, the light was bad as expected but i used ISO 6400 anyway, i really don't know how to link my images here because i uploaded them on an arabic forum of the team i did shoot for, and almost 98% were resized to 600xABC or 800xABD [I think 2 or 3 photos only], maybe small for you to check them out.

I may resize them again to 1000-1024px and post them on my football/sports thread, will take time though.
