I am looking into getting a monitor in a few weeks and need some help. I have a T3i so I know it does not output HD through the HDMI and on most monitors you cannot use the full screen which to me seems to defeat the purpose of using a larger monitor. If the monitor says it has native 5Dii output would that mean it will use the full monitor in 5D mode? Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent monitor around the 300-500 that would work in full screen? I have been considering the Ikan VL5 since it has native 5D but I cannot find any videos or pictures of it in action.

You should take a close look at the offerings from smallHD.
I picked up a DP-6 from them, and although I haven't really used it out in the field yet, so far I'm very impressed. The resolution is amazing, the menu system very straightforward and the accessories very nicely designed. They offer a smaller model and an EVF as well, but I wanted the larger screen so I wasn't constantly taking my glasses on and off. Plan on using it for my tripod still shots as well as video. I think the reviews pretty much put it at the top of its class (that includes Marshall) and I noticed they just posted a reduction of $300 off the DP-6 (although you'll need a few accessories as well).

Check it out!

EDIT: I use a 5DII, can't say about the compatibility with the T3i, but their site would spell it out.

hahahaha I misread the price I got the specs off their website and went to amazon and saw $550 and got way too excited now I realize that price is for a dp4 . But if there is one thing I do know good and cheap do not go together. The dp6 seems really nice from what I am reading but it is a little more then I am looking to spend but who knows it may be the way I end up going

Same here. I have a DP6 after owning several other cheaper models in various prices and yea, none of them were worth it. The SmallHD products are BY FAR the best option out there. Keep your eye on ebay and video forums, DP6's pop up for sale used in perfect condition fairly regularly and sell for a good couple hundred at least below retail.

I am giving considerable thought to the DP4 and get the EVF later seems like a sweet set up for off the shoulder shooting. The thing is a mainly do nature macro work and think a larger monitor will be better for when I am on a tripod at almost ground level. After looking further into it I may end upgoing the smallhd way its just more then I planned on spending on a monitor I will just have to rap my head around it cause they do seem extremely nice

That's another reason I took the plunge-- I feel like I have a view camera now, given the size and clarity of the image, and I don't have to have the camera in a comfortable position to view it.
