I just bought a skyport universal speed receiver for my 580 EXII and I am not sure if it is the skyport universal receiver that is defective or if I am doing something wrong. I also bought a http://flashzebra.com/wizardcables/elinchrom.shtml (external link) for skyport receiver. Now, sorry for the newbie question, but do I need a hot shoe adapter to fire the flash or would cold shoe work? I googled it and it seems I may have a defective skyport receiver.

What I am finding odd is, that when I charge the skyport receiver, the green light is on and it is solid green, but once I take it off charge and attach the cable from receiver to flash and press on button, it will not go green at all.

Before I send it back, I wanted to make sure it was not any user error on my part and that is why I wanted to confirm if I need a hot shoe?

Thank you.

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

I can't tell if its on speed mode or not because the receiver is not turning on at all when connected to flash?

When i connected the pc sync cable to flash, I get a flash perhaphs indicating that connection is secured, but when I press the on button on the receiver itself, nothing happens.

I tried to hold the test button on transmitter for 5 seconds but no luck. Also, on my transmitter there is no status light at all since it maybe one of the newer version of transmitters?

I think I may have to return these :(. After charging it for more than 3 hours, it just will not turn on at all. I have held the ON/OFF button for more than 5 seconds and still no luck.

If the receiver were working, the LED would be blinking on and off. If it isn't doing that, then it's defective.

Are you sure you have the right cable? I would have used this one (external link) to connect to a 580ex. You need a male pc to mono microphone.

This may be a stupid question, but do you have the skyport transmitter? You don't mention one.

I bought this cable which is also for skyport http://flashzebra.com/wizardcables/elinchrom.shtml (external link). Recommended by someone since it has the screw locks for better connection.

Yes, I do have a transmitter which came with the 2 600rx lights.

I was thinking the same thing about the cable you mentioned as you could not possibly use that cable to connect the Universal Skyport to the 580EX II. That cable has a large Amphenol plug which for Elinchrom strobes and packs and there's no way to use it directly with the 580EX II. However, since you had said that you did have the 580EX II connected to the Skyport, presumably via the 580 EX II PC port, I assumed that you just specified the wrong part number in your post. If not, then I'm really curious to know how you were able to use that cable with the 580EX II.

"Also, on my transmitter there is no status light at all " all transmitters that are shown on the Elinchrom site have an led light of some sort on them. The only thing that I can see without an led is the "Skyport transceiver RX" which only works as a receiver on RX lights.
Can you take a picture of it maybe some one here can identify it?

Here is the pic of the universal receiver and Transmitter which has no led light on transmitter. Also, I bought a seperate cable from flashzebra http://flashzebra.com/wizardcables/screwlock.shtml (external link) which I connect to the Canon 580 EXII.

I have the old ones so I can't help, they only have lights on the receivers. You are doing a long press to turn it on, right?

I connect a screwlock cable to my camera PC port and velcro the transmitter to the side of my flash, I use a hotshoe adapter on the flash. That won't make any difference to your problem though. Sounds faulty, return it.
