I connect a screwlock cable to my camera PC port and velcro the transmitter to the side of my flash, I use a hotshoe adapter on the flash. That won't make any difference to your problem though. Sounds faulty, return it.

Yes, I do the long press to try turning it on but no luck. I do the same connection, screw lock on my camera and then the universal receiver is velcroed to the 580 EXII.
Quick question Tim, should the universal receiver light go green after full charge when you press the on button? OR does it only go on once you connect the cable to the flash? I am thinking it should go green regardless?
