This lens will have a silent autofocus motor geared to video. It will arrive with the new Rebel T4i. This has shown up in a US retailer inventory system. No price for the kit with the T4i."

Why would you want a silent AF motor "geared to video" unless AF is working while you are shooting?

Contrast detection AF can be engaged at any time by pressing AF button.

That's not continuous autofocus; it re-focuses with each button press. Since that mess has to be edited out anyway, the focusing motor's noise is mostly irrelevant.

But you can't edit out the part where you're trying to refocus on

If Canon brings touch screen focusing similar to the Nex 5n, you can rack focus by touching two different objects, a silent AF would be great.

Though I think continuous focusing for the T4i seems likely in order to keep up with Nex and the new Olympus.

Gotta agree with you on that. Seems logical if kitting it with a lens designed for silent focusing with video.

I have purchased and used a Sony SLT AV 55 that has as one of its features true continuous AF in the video mode. Yep, I know that this a Canon forum, but I am glad Canon has decided to add continuous AF

A great photo only starts with the shutter release,
