AE focus is your friend.

Hey Chief, I'm curious: did you mean by this "AI Focus is your friend"?

If not, well, I don't know what you mean by AE Focus...

But if so, this statement is interesting for two reasons!

First, it's interesting because AI Focus has such a terrible reputation here -- people getting bad results...

But second, it's interesting because relatively recently one or two discussions have come up about AI Focus. I had never actually explored it or used it, I just knew the "common wisdom" to avoid it...

But, I'm kind of a dork, in that occasionally I'll check things out a bit, and sometimes have been known to actually suggest a person to try out an unpopular "feature", hey, I've even encouraged people to shoot in Auto for certain scenarios...

So, I decided to investigate AI Focus, to understand it, see how it worked, and you know what? There are times when it could come in handy, but I think I see why so many people report it as "BAD"!

I'll stop here -- if anyone wants to discuss this and to know my thoughts, chime in!

I've never had AI work in a predictable fashion.

I've had it hunt on static subjects and I've seen it utterly fail to adjust when something moved. I simply stay in Servo via Back Button. One touch and let go is the same as One Shot or else I keep the button down to track moving objects.

OK, so here's my thoughts:

First, as to how AI Focus works: what I found out (by reading and testing) is that AI Focus starts in One Shot focus. And, it really does. In other words, if you can get a focus lock/shot in One Shot, you can get one in AI Focus, but, and this is important to realize, if you can't get a lock/confirmation/shot in One Shot, then AI focus will never be able to get off the ground! Note that you don't actually have to take the shot but you do have to have at least one initial focus/lock/confirmation.

I didn't realize that, at least not in a first-hand sense, because I had never actually used it. But in testing things out, yeah, it won't kick in until it gets one focus lock.

Then, if you keep your finger half-pressed, you can either take the initial shot(s) or, if either your camera or your subject moves, the camera kicks into AI Servo. But, if you let up on your shutter button, you are kicked back into One Shot and need again to acquire focus.

So, the complaint you sometime hear is that the camera is not quick enough to switch from One Shot mode to Servo mode. Well, I'm sure that that's camera and lens dependent, that's a fair question, but really it does do the switch. I can sit in my chair and get focus lock and then swivel around, panning my room, and the AI Servo is working. As to how accurate and fast it is, again, I'd say that's camera/lens dependent, but that's exactly like "normal" AI servo. It can take a bit to "get" the subject, and it can be hit-or-miss tracking, depending on the light, the detail and the gear.

So, in other words, it's possible that AI Focus has gotten a "bad rap", simply because there is a bit more in play than just One Shot AF and AI Servo AF alone.

Maybe...although for my day-to-day shooting I'll still tend to stay in one or the other, but it would be interesting in doing some further testing of AI Focus in "real world" shooting...
