We have had a break in the clouds but it's really hazy. Not a photographic night at all.
I did take a picture of the moon a while ago though.

Shoot manual. Start with 1/250 @f/8 ISO100. If you use a tripod, turn the IS off. Using a remote and mirror lock up will give you the best stability. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I did all that, but the moon was low in the sky, so I was shooting through more haze than if it had been more directly overhead.

At least I can honestly say the post-processing was minimal, and possibly I could have improved it some that way. I deemed it as not being worth the effort.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

It's not from last night. It's the last super moon from last year. Last night the moon came out strong and bright but it was so hazy that it was not a photographic night.

Start with the moony 11 rule.
Aperture a f/11. Shutter speed the reciprocal of the ISO. So ISO 400, shutter at 1/400. Then adjust from there.

So if your lens is sharpest at f/8, that's one stop so back of the ISO to ISO200 or bump the shutter to 1/800.

Dan's suggestions are the same thing I do. I hang my camera bag on the tripod to add stability.

Unfortunately, no matter how well we do the technical part, we're still at the mercy of the atmospheric haze and distortion, and our own failure to remember basic scientific facts like the one about warm air rising. :o Yesterday it hit 80 around here. It looked like a relatively clear day. But a bad location choice on my part overlooked the fact that I was attempting to shoot a moonrise over a nearby ridge that had sun on it all afternoon. Basic science, warm air rises and distorts.

Here's an example of how not to do it. The cross like structure at the base of the moon is a 300 foot commercial microwave/TV antenna on top of the ridge about 3-4 miles from where I was shooting.

Not much fix for atmospheric conditions. A slightly different location might have improved the results, but sometimes you are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Speaking of Mother Nature, she is dumping on us big time. Lots and lots of rain, the straight down kind. No wind, just rain. My rain gauge is saying I've had 1.5 inches in the last 45 minutes and it's still pouring.

Like Tim said, knowing the conditions and how they might effect things, can help you choose a location that best suits your needs. Thermals can do some strange things....and they aren't always bad.

I saw a great shot slip away last night. There was a cloud that looked almost like a wolf that passed directly in front of the moon. Only trouble, I was in a line of traffic on a secondary road....with no place to pull off when the shot appeared.

In my case part of the problem was that moonrise was shortly after sunset. I should have factored that into my choice of locations. If moonrise had been 3 or 4 hours later, the ridge would have cooled more, and the atmospheric distortion would likely have been much less.

Thermals can make for some interesting shots.

Too bad about the wolf cloud, sounds like it would have been an interesting shot.
