In the same way that "golden hour" helps lower the dynamic range for stuff on Earth, it can do the same for shooting the moon.

If the astronomic alignments allow, try to catch the Moon before it's completely dark out. You can always tweak levels and contrast in post...

This seemingly flat*, innocuous moon at dusk:

IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/s3/v38/p232952484.jpg

Can be made to look pretty dramatic with some pixel dust applied:
IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/s3/v38/p80857169.jpg

(*The key is "Flat" .. When you don't have outrageous contrast to fight [Sunlit object surrounded by a black void], it's easier to keep a handle on your exposure.)

Just some food for thought...

Really bad editing attempt from 2007...

There's a good reason I tend to leave most of my PBase stuff buried really, really deeply...

It was a noble try, and would have been a tad bit more believable if you had blurred the shadow, too.

Definitely not bad for 2007, although you've apparently come a long way since then. (some of us haven't.)

I've gone somewhere since 2007 but I can't say it's all been for the good!

Another moon from my checkered past that, IIRC, was also shot before astronomical twilight ended.

Burnett: You may want to consider downloading The Photographers Ephemeris which is a great way to keep tabs on what the Sun and Moon are up to each day! :D

The cyclist is utterly shred-worthy but the Plane/Moon is the real deal!

If you're into views of the SF Bay area from the air, and airships, and some unique views of Alcatraz, check this out.

Me too! I think Tim is hosting a weekend get-together for all of us soon. ;) Since he lives on the scenic corridor and all, I figured it would be cool if we all camped out on his front lawn... tents and fire-pits required. I'll bring the s'mores and some cosmopolitans. We can do light painting with flashlights at night, and spend a couple of days walking around San Fran, and hit Bodega for the sunsets... and finally land up at a place like Hawk Hill for the night scenes of the bridge...

Works for me.

Guess it isn't for everyone. Just normal people.

Who's normal?

I've fallen off of motorcycles just about every way it is possible to do so. I've laid them down, gone over the high side, gone over the bars, and even fallen off the back of one while doing a wheelie. None of that scared me enough to keep me off of them until........

........seeing the aftermath of a guy who hit a sign post causing his head to explode like a melon did the trick for me, at least for street bikes. That was the start of a process that eventually led to me parking them for good. I've always thought I might like to ride again someday, but I think I can finally say I'm now too old. I guess it's pretty much out of my system now, so it's bicycles for me from here on.

I'm getting to the point where I'm becoming less and less enthusiastic about motorcycles. I'm about to the point where I'm going to get rid of my 30-year-old GoldWing (going to donate it to the zoo) and put some money into Heather's bike and use it myself. She stopped riding a couple of years ago...
