I have a different philosophy. If I get money back, it's an indicator I did poor planing at the beginning of the year. I would much rather keep my own hard earn pay than to stick it into a zero percent interest savings account.

I just can't plan that well, and I hate having to come up with a bunch o' cash at tax time, so I try to make sure I'm always on the other side. I do keep the refund as small as possible, though.

I did my taxes a little over a week ago. I was very surprised to find my refund checks from both State and Federal in my checking account last Wednesday. It didn't even take a full week from filing to deposit!

It helps that we pay quarterly, so we can adjust. But I always plan on paying about 1k extra so we put a little away each paycheck.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

That's always my goal too. I hate a lot of overtime so my paychecks can fluctuate a lot.

I filed mine about a week and a half ago, but through the mail... I hope my refund gets deposited soon. I need a 17-50. :p

We've been using the same tax person for several years and I sat down with her once and she showed me how to lay everything out. I set up an excel spreadsheet with all the categories we need to save for, mortgage, car payments, vacation, taxes, and such. We then carve out the needed $$ up front and the rest becomes general living funds. It takes about 5 minutes a paycheck to update the spreadsheet and do the funds transfer. So far it's worked well.

And I have absolutely no clue how I would change how much income tax I pay. Other than requesting more be taken off each pay, but the equates to a bigger return.

Here we can adjust how much withholding is taken each pay period. I have my workplace withhold as little as possible and file quarterlies to make sure we are in the ballpark. It takes a little diciplin to not spend it though because your paycheck can get quite a bit larger.

I still have all of the cash from my 2010 refunds sitting in a savings account. Add that to my 2011 refunds, a few cash rebates I've received over the last several months, and the small check the insurance sent me last July after my car accident to shut me up about the bruise I got... I have a little over $2800 in that particular savings account. And, I still haven't needed any of it for anything.

It isn't enough to get me a 5D3, even if I wanted to spend so long on a waiting list. But, it's more than enough for a 5D2 with grip... It's oh, so tempting! Should I go for it? Or, should I just leave the money where it is? Decisions, decisions...

A gripped 5DII would be pretty sweet.

I am kinda leaning that way... It'd be nice to finally see what the big deal is about full frame! :)

I don't know if we can do that. I know we can have more taken off, but I don't see a reason why, unless you need that automatic 'savings account'. One of the guys I work with does that but I don't know why.

Pssh, it's just a gimmic.

No it really is quite nice. As long as you can live with the mediocre AF the 5D II is a nice camera.
