wanting to increase my memory for my iMac to 16gb, aside from potential room for expansion

whats the difference between getting 4x4gb versus 2x8gb? are there any performance gain, etc.

the price difference at OWC between the two is pretty significant.

one is using 4 sticks to get to 16 gigs and one is using only 2 sticks. I am unaware of any noticable performance difference between the two.

If you never plan to upgrade past 16GB then it makes no difference, except price. In theory 4x4GB could be faster but I don't know if it is in practice.

If the sticks have the same speed rating, then I'd go for the 4x4 purely on a cost basis.

Difrference-wise, you might get a couple of points different on a benchmark test, but in the real world, you won't notice any difference at all.
