I have started contemplating switching from the 7d to a d700. I shoot more and more evening high school soccer and basketball and am just not 100% behind the IQ I get especially when going to iso6400 for soccer. I ran some numbers and would be a lot less money to go for the d700 and new gear than a Mk IV with current gear. Haven't done it yet as I keep saying "1 more game"...

For you guys/gals that have switched one way or the other - what was your motivator?

I switched from Nikon to Canon around 1989. It was painful. I wouldn't do it again, but I would consider picking up a D800 as an extra body. Doing the waiting game now until I see reports/photos from people using it who are not on the Nikon payroll.

Only if Canon went broke, and even then I'd probably wait a while since I quite like what I currently have.

Is seems like Canon might be updating their AF in non-1D series cameras, but at what cost? I'd at least wait and see if the 5DIII is any good, but then if you don't have $10k in Canon lenses it would be easier.

I got into Canon becasue of the lens selection and 5DII and after several years of learning more I know it was the right decision for me, but I don't shoot sports.

I would have thought a 1DIV would be a lot more preferable than a D700 though.

The cost to go to the Mk IV is almost 1500 more than the d700 when considering lens etc...

I rather give up and go back to a bridge camera than switch brands. I've spent around $18K on getting my gear together, and still planning on future buys. It's caused me a few headaches on the way to where I am and if I had to swap brands, it'd cause me a few more. I'd sell the lot, get a very good bridge or high zoom compact and go on holiday with the rest, for a rest.

In my latter pre digital days I had both Canon and Nikon bodies and therefore lens for both, a situ I wouldn't wish to back to down to expense.
When I went digital almost a decade ago the first 2nd hand digital body I could afford in digitals early days happened to be a Canon (D30). Had it been a 2nd hand Nikon body the shop had that day I guess I would have Nikon today - which wouldn't be a problem

Most Canons currently - 1D(Mks 2&3&4), 7D gripped 50D gripped x2, 40Dgripped x2, 30Dgripped, 20D gripped, 350 gripped, 300. with L lenses

Why would you switch brand?

If the other brand made a better body and also gave away free adapter rings for EF mount that retained all lens functions.

I think I would only switch for the improved autofocus during video mode that Nikon claims to offer.

Other than that, I'm satisfied with my Canon gear.

I've heard that it's not very good, it tends to still lose focus and hunt a lot. So you are stuck with manual..or just use an actual camcorder (crazy!). Or get something like the S100.

I wouldn't. Costs too much to do and I'm also too lazy to be bothered.

People who talk about 'switching sides' are either ****ting money or have some crazy camera gear buying/selling hookups that I need to get up on.

It's not like my current gear is holding me back anyway.

You might want to wait to see if there is a 5Diii announcement soon. The D700 will inevitably drop in price anyway once the D800 and 5Diii hit shelves, so even if you go that route it's prudent to wait. The 7D is a great camera and though it might not provide perfect results at high ISO, it's certainly workable. No camera is the 'magic bullet' for that kind of thing yet. You might gain a stop or two of low light performance, but is it really worth switching all of your gear?

I don't see what the point is, even if Nikon or someone else has something great right now sooner or later Canon will come back with something else so what then? Switch back?

At the end of the day its really more about the person behind the camera.
