I don't get all this gear craze for switching brands. Sure gear is cool, but if someone can't be content with a 5DMKII and a stable of L lenses.....not sure if you would be content with anything.

i think most people cant be content with it because companies innovate and invent. they need to make money and they have competition.

as long as there is something new coming out that does things better... most people naturally want it... some actually need it.

theres a reason why we all use "D"slr's and not film anymore. times change people innovate and makes things better... goes for all electronics, tv's, phones, cars and so on....

plus for some we make money from photography. if it means paying a little more to make my job easier i will do it. even if it means i need to switch brands.

Yes, totally understand if the gear will make you back a lot of money on the cost of updating. It would be interesting to see the % of people who actually do though.

I used to shoot with nikon, and very much liked it until, I picked up my brother-in-laws 30D. I just loved the button configuration and the wheel. I have large hands so to get the proper action, for me, was much easier on the canon config / ergo. This of course is all BS probably because I often used my small cameras such as the LX3 and GF1 which on not very comfortable with large hands. But certainly when I want to get the best out of myself, I reach for the 5D.

Op has 7d but I digress :) (with jest)
I wouldn't want the 5d MkII for sports. It's been said a few times in this thread, there is no one perfect solution. It's only up to the owner/user of the gear. Seems the OP was just staing his particular situation and thoughts and asked what reasons if any would make posters change their gear.

to follow-up, I will say my older brother shoots with a D700 and it is a beast. And when you factor in just how clean the images are from that body, I could easily see why someone would switch, especially if you are not that invested in the canon system.

Imagine a newspaper sports tog with a 5DMKII 40-30 or even 20 years ago. They would thought they'd died and went to photographers heaven.

Would I switch brand?

When I contemplated buying my first DSLR I looked at Nikon first, mainly due to the recommendations of friends, most of whom were on the dark side ;) They had all suggested I look at the D80 and I had made up my mind that was the body I needed to get. However I found it very cramped, the viewfinder not very bright, it lacked Live View which I wanted for macro use but most importantly the camera didn't feel very comfortable in my hands. The assistant in the store showed me a 40D which was at that juncture more expensive than the D80 and more than I was looking to spend. On searching through the used dealers I found a good copy and when I decided to change my career, I never considered any other brand.

Canon's thinking on bodies is changing. Expressed at the last Photo Solutions in London when the 1Dx was on show was that the company ( at last ) realised that consumers would rather buy a body that does everything as opposed to one for portraits and landscapes, another for sport etc. With this is mind and the fabulous quality and range of Canon glass, my mind is definitely made up.
