is there a way to manage in AP3 and still work in LR? or is the importing a difference maker? Also, I generally import from the onboard memory card reader and not directly from the camera. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

You can point both programs to the same set of images easily enough, but you can not see edits from one program in the other one.

I've also been trying to figure out which is a better program to use, I like the Aperture layout but the LR isn't bad either. I had a question or two maybe you guys can help me with. So for my setup, I've copied all my photos from my NAS to a Western Digital My book enternal USB drive. For both programs, I have it referencing the hard drive and didn't make an additional copy in the photo program.
In Aperture, I can't delete an image and have it delete the original. I'm trying to go through all my pictures and clean up a bit, obviously there are many bad pics I'd rather just delete. But even if I choose the COMMAND +Delete, it still leaves a copy on the WD. I also tried "Delete Master and all iterations" but that didn't seem to work either. In Lightroon, I just hit delete, a warning message come up and I click yes.
I like the feature in Aperture where you can see where you had focused when you took the phot, does lightroom have a similar feature? Also, in Aperture, there's a tab where you can see all the information from the camera (metadata?) I don't see an option for this in Lightroom aside from what's posted in the upper right (ISO, Speed, aperture etc). Aperture even lists the camera used etc.

Any help is appreciated. I think I like Lightroom more at this point. It seems faster in loading the images on the screen. Granted my Macbook and hard drive may be a few years old and not the fastest. It's also kind of cool how lightroom numbers all your images, so if you have 5,000 images, eash one has a count next to it. Not sure why that's helpful, but I kind of like it.

In Lightroom, there is a Metadata panel in the Library module -- scroll down the right side and you will see it below the "Keyword List" for a selected photo.

Also, in the Library module you can click the Grid view and at the top above the Preview there are choices for showing various kinds of data for the photos in your film strip. Click the Metadata field and you have all the various fields available in four panels -- to choose a particular field to display mouse over one of the labels (camera, lens, etc) and select what you want to display there.

Deleting it sends it to Aperture's trash. You have to empty the trash to delete the file from your drive. Depending on your settings in Aperture, it may or may not be moved to the trash on your Mac after this step.

Also, in Aperture, there's a tab where you can see all the information from the camera (metadata?) I don't see an option for this in Lightroom aside from what's posted in the upper right (ISO, Speed, aperture etc). Aperture even lists the camera used etc.

Lightroom has all of this information, but unlike Aperture, you can't see all information or perform all tasks from anywhere within the program. Go to the Library module in Lightroom and make sure the right had control panel is visible. You'll find it there.

Thanks for the tips, I poked around Lightroom a bit more last night and found the photo information, funny, I could've sworn I looked at all the modules.
I just saw your comment today about deleting and emptying Aperture's trash, I'll have to try it out when I get home.
If I figure out some of my issues, the decision between Lightroom and Aperture sways back towards Aperture. I like how I can group a bunch of photos and give t a name "i.e. Disney Oct 2009". I don't see that capibility in Lightroom yet. A friend had suggested saving multiple libraries to do that, but I'm not sure I want 50 different libraries.

LR 4 is out. Another reason to stick with Adobe Lightroom over Aperture. I'm just not confident in Apple's ability to keep up the updates and it seems they are trending to "dumbing down" their "pro" software to app like functionality.

Not confident in their ability to continue updates? Why not?

Apple released Aperture in 2005. Adobe realized the future of a product like this, so they bought Pixmantec RawShooter in 2006, then used the processing engine as the core of Lightroom. Lightroom was released in 2007.

From there, Aperture 2 was released in February 2008. Lightroom 2 followed in April 2008. Lightroom 3 was released in October 2009; Aperture 3 just a few months later in February 2010. Other than Adobe's delay of getting into the game in the first place, there has never been more than a few months difference in release dates. Both Apple and Adobe have released Camera RAW & Digital RAW updates along with incremental updates to their software several times per year.

I'm not seeing any evidence that Apple won't stay in the game.

Perhaps you didn't witness what they did to Final Cut Pro.

Yes, I read a bunch of internet hype about this, but I don't see how it's relevant toward continued development of Digital Camera RAW or Aperture. I'm not a Final Cut user and don't know any personally, so I can't make any intelligent comments on that situation.

In Lightroom you create Collections to do this -- no need for separate libraries. Of course you have keywords as well.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but the baby in the first picture looks sickly.

I'm an Aperture user, but after using the LR4 beta, I'm considering a switch. Just waiting to see what Aperture 4 is like. I expect an announcement any day now, possibly even tomorrow.

Check out my feedback here.

I've been an Aperture user since the beginning and started using LR3 a few months ago. I hate the LR workflow and find Aperture's user experience much better. However, there are some things that LR3 simply does a whole lot better. NR is virtually useless in Aperture, whereas LR's is pretty powerful. I also really hate the rendering time that Aperture takes before being able to see a full image. The overall snappiness of LR is, IMHO, a very compelling reason to switch.

Question: is there a way to display an image fullscreen in LR? I love being able to hit the "F" key to maximize the image in Aperture.

Click on the four triangles, Left, Right, Top, Bottom...that causes the usual things displayed in those areas to not default to being displayed. If you want access to the Menu at the right, simply move the mouse toward the right edge, and the usual menu appears; move the mouse away, and the menu disappears again.

Yeah, I already know about hiding the menus and stuff. But it still leaves the the application window and menu bars at the top of the screen. Aperture is able to truly go full screen and you can still call up adjustment menus as overlays. I think this is much more elegant and really helps when you're working on a laptop. I forgot to check to see if LR4 has improved in this regard.

Press F for Full Screen, then L to toggle through several levels of "Lights Out" mode.
