Any thoughts, I like to do outdoor portraits battling against the sun.
I'm thinking about buying like a carbon fibre sound pole, a beauty dish and a 430/580ex speed light to get some unique lighting.

I got the lastolite extending pole (external link) for use with my ezxbox. It works well and comes with a little holster that the butt sits in for a bit of comfort carrying it. I use a manfrotto (external link) swivel adaptor with it (the lastolite one is pony).

Same here! I just don't have the beauty dish yet but use a softbox on the painters pole.

I use the Kacey Pole adapter for a Molla Setti/Einstein and I also hookup the VMLBracket.com (Joe?) and its a hit! I have two one pole extends from 4' to 6' and the other extend to 6' to 11' no issues so far

dont laugh but I lent out my avenger boom and suddenly I had to do an urgent exec headshot.

I used my paint pole with kacey pole adapter with the 22" kacy dish. Put the pole on a super clamp that was sitting on a manfrotto light stand. That ghetto setup worked like a charm :)

Fiberglass Painter's pole with I think the Cheetah pole adapter. Use my Alien Bees and either 47" Octa or 22" Kasy BD on it. Fiberglass pole is very heavy duty and can really extend high if need be.

I wonder if an alienbees strobe could fit the thread.

That's similar to both painting poles that I use. I have hockey tape all over to avoid accidents. Usually my wife is the one holding the pole while I shoot. I like it because is the only time I can tell her what to do and she does it. I don't recommend to stretch the pole all the way because it might snap if the light plus modifier are heavy.

Thing with the pole is that you need an assistant. Now I am using nice avenger stand with rollers.

Phil,
Get the Kacey adapter. It screws onto the pole and the light will attach to it just as it does to a light stand.

Either friend Phamster on FB or look for his posts here

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=914406

He has some posts with softboxes & BDs on poles, held by "assistants" (moms, brothers etc)
