Beauty dish on a pole?

Here is one example of the Einstein/MC2/Kacey Pole Adapter... The pole was not extended but it gives you a height of 7'5" to the top of strobe. I'm with Bobby the rollers are fantastic but on the beach having someone to hold the pole is very convenient. This was the only place that had a concrete sidewalk.

Using your 430/580 outside in bright sunlight will not work with a beauty dish. These strobes don't have enough light for anything but headshots when using diffusion with bright sunlight. Shoot straight flash for maximum power. You'll be surprised how nice the light looks with straight flash - Set one flash high to the side on top of an 8-foot light stand, with the other flash on-camera for fill.
Over more than 35 years of shooting strobe in the "synchro-sun" technique (yes, I'm using a term from waaaay back!) I've used every combination of lighting outdoors, and continually come back to straight flash. Don't think you need complicated setups for beautiful images! Keep it simple and you'll do just fine.
Try it, you'll like it!
- PS - plain old 8-foot lightstand, which holds itself up and doesn't require lots of helpers - keep it simple!

If not a beauty dish then what kind of diffusion would you recommend that is portable for on the field shoots. What I'd like to do is be able to get the background of the subject in proper exposure with the flash to expose the subject.

I am not sure if that is correct.. Peter Nguyen (pnmd) has several set up shots that show SB900 speedlights with kacey BD.

Shanker, as you see the bg in those shots by Peter are blown out. I use to use two 550ex with kacey dish. Even at full power not enought power to take out the sun unless very close. Here dish is very close and I am just matching sun barely. Now this could be due to the fact that I was trying HSS mode that day. This shot f2.8, 1/1250 I guess.

Get the Kacey adapter. It screws onto the pole and the light will attach to it just as it does to a light stand.

That's similar to both painting poles that I use. I have hockey tape all over to avoid accidents. Usually my wife is the one holding the pole while I shoot. I like it because is the only time I can tell her what to do and she does it. I don't recommend to stretch the pole all the way because it might snap if the light plus modifier are heavy.

Thanks! Yes, I'm very lucky to have someone that allows me to enjoy photography and wants to be part of it.... well only if the temperature is lower than 70's. She is a CFO so giving her orders is just a lot of FUN specially when I have to tell her to put her weight so we can finish! I see her and I know she is furious but she does it. She is a great woman! That's nice. I wonder, though, whether he pulled out the center "pole" from under the legs or pulled up from above the legs? On my air-cushioned Impact lightstand, I can't do that from either direction due to an obstruction.

Your adapter arrived yesterday, and I just received a 6'-12' Wooster Sherlock painter's pole that is made of fiberglass. They go together very nicely!

However, even with the Wooster fiberglass pole, there's a warning label that states: "Hazard of Electrical Shock or Burn: This extension pole is NOT to be used ON or NEAR electrical wiring of any type. Keep at least 10 feet away from any power lines."

So, apparently, it's not just the lightning that we have to worry about!
