Stage 6 Udden's Forest. First attempt at Motor Sport, absolutely great fun, addicted to it after this. Appreciate any and all input, thanks.

Like the mitsi and the escort photo, cracking attempt for a first go, if youd lowered your shutter speed you could could have got abit of motion in the wheels particulary the sierra as its looks parked.

Thanks for your tip, it's the one thing that my mate and I thought, they can tend to look a bit 'parked'.

I'll get some more up tomorrow.

P.S. None of them have been 'doctored' they are straight off the camera.

Thanks, yes I was. If I wasn't, then I was in a ditch as in shots 4 and 7. I was in a ditch for this one, the car was about 2 feet away when it went past. Most thought I was mental for being there. :D

No offence, but you really are mental if you lie down or get in a ditch to take these sorts of photographs. If anything goes wrong, you will have zero chance to get out of the way. Now you might think the risk is worth taking, but think of the poor crew who will have to live with the fact that they've ran you over and at best injured you or at worse killed you. I always make sure I have something like a ditch or a substantial tree between me and the cars and have a pre-planned escape route should the worse come to the worse.

There is absolutely no reason to do either of these things to get a decent shot on a rally.

I appreciate what you are saying and we talked about risks beforehand. I wasn't on the 'danger' side. I went to the opposite side to where the cars could have come spun off.

There were people stood in front of a potential spin off point with children! We did think that Marshals were very lax in where they let people stand.

Fully understand and probably at some rallyes spectators would not have been allowed to stand where they were allowed to today.

As someone who's been photographing rallies for 10+ years, there's no such thing as a 'danger' side with all due respect. All you're doing is playing the probabilities. Rally cars are notoriously unpredictable and it doesn't take much to spit them off in a direction you would not have predicted.

At the very least do not lie down to take photos - you really would have no chance....

Sorry buddy,but you were in well dodgy places and in 4 the driver is looking at you ,probably saying WTF is that fella doing there !
No shot is worth that,mate ,and I go to loads of rallys and have seen folk killed .

Simon, thanks for your advise and I have taken it on board, no more lying down!

As I said it was my first time , you are right of course the unpredictability of it all, a gear box could seize on a dead straight piece of track and a car could flip anywhere.

Experience is worth a lot, thanks again.

I had £3500 of gear trashed by a car on a straight on an Airfield at an event not long back,he went of inexplicably at 90 degrees ,hit the gear ,then drove off .

As advice rather than as a dig:

3, 5, 6 & 8 (and possibly 2) look light the outside of a corner at less than car height, that's pretty much the worst place you can be as car's momentum will drag it out towards you. 4 & 7 look like possibly the inside of a corner in a ditch which is the second worst place you can be as crews will want to cut the inside to save time, especially with that nice flat looking bit of grass in front of you. It does appear to be the exit which is slightly better than the apex or entry as they're more likely to be wide at that point but it's also exactly where a spin is going to deposit the car as the driver tries to stop it disappearing off into the trees.

Cars can skitter around all over the place, especially on a rally, and a driver over correcting a mistake is going to make them end up the exact opposite place to where you expect. There was a car on the Riponian last year than came around the 90 right that the spectator area was set up at and went a bit wide (to roughly the equivalent of where you are in 3, 5, 6 & 8) then went back to the inside of the corner (roughly equivalent where you are in 4 & 7) and continued for a hundred meters or so swinging from one side of the road to the other. It was snowy and muddy which will have contributed to this but gravel isn't terribly grippy either.
That's not even getting into cars rolling, tumbling end over end, hooking ditches and being spat out in an unusual ways, bouncing back off trees, the suspension collapsing, punctures or anything like that.

The car isn't going to care if other people are standing in dodgy places or not, it's just going to flatten you and it'll be a complete nightmare for everyone involved in the event.
Also there's no such thing as a side that isn't the danger side, there's just a mildly less dangerous side. You need to be able to move quickly at any time regardless of where you are.
