I had £3500 of gear trashed by a car on a straight on an Airfield at an event not long back,he went of inexplicably at 90 degrees ,hit the gear ,then drove off .

OUCH! Really sorry to hear.

As I said it was my first. I was looking at trying to get shots from different angles with no experience. Many years ago I did land Rover Rally driving in the Army in Germany so I did try to stay away from what could be perceived as the danger/spin off points.

The thing is, I was not alone were I was, there were spectators standing next to me. When I was laying down I was in a ditch, not just next to the track.. So I felt I could duck into the ditch under a car should the worst happen. I was only ever a mximum of 3 metres off the bend.

I'm not for a minute trying to defend myself but attempting to explain my thinking and 'risk assessment'.

Some good advice in the posts above. I seen some real close calls over the years with cars ending up in the most unexpected places. As has been said always have an escape planned and I'm never happy unless I've got something solid between me and the cars. I was in Ringwood today and agree that the standard of marshalling was poor and some of the locations people were allowed to stand was staggering. As for your photo's I think you did well for a first attempt and the low view point works well, just don't take any unnecessary risks getting them.

Thank you, the reason I thought of getting low was that most photos of cars I have seen all seem to be at driver's head height, so it just got my thinking as to what shots would look like from a different angle. I love the shots looking up and along, but as, has been pointed out to me, no shot is worth a potentially fatal risk .... Lesson learned!

We couldn't believe also how adults with children could stand in such blatantly dangerous spots, right on the apex of the bend, no protection, some no more than 2 metres off the track with stones and parts of bricks flying. not wishing to harp on but I was in a safer places than many.

"Safe" positions are always a matter of opinion, but laying in a ditch is a universal no-no.

Very nice shot out the ditch pity about the different dimensions posted.

Hi,
If you want to get those low down in the ditch shots maybe you should consider a good tripod and a remote firing switch and hope your gear doesn’t get wiped out.
Some nice shots all the same.

Like the mitsi and the escort photo, cracking attempt for a first go, if youd lowered your shutter speed you could could have got abit of motion in the wheels particulary the sierra as its looks parked.
Post some more if you get any.

A couple more, I'm in the process of uploading them onto photobucket but it's taking hours (about 100 photos) Anybody got a better alternative please?

Are they full size images or resized? It maybe down to your connection speed that they are uploading slowly. I use picturebox and flickr to upload my images, may be worth trying one of those than youll know whether its your broadband or the site.

Anyway back on topic, i like that escort shot youve just posted.
