If not the 3D, then what?

When Canon released the 1DX, it collapsed the two bodies 1DsMKII and 1DMKV into a single body. For the first time, we have a camera that studio photographers, and sports/wildlife photographers can use, albeit at a premium price of around $7500. The rumour mill is heavy with the anticipated release of the 5Dx, which seems to be combining the features of the 5D MKII (FF, high MP) and 7D (AF and FPS) into a single body, at a price point of $3500.

This is great, but I can't imagine that Canon is going to leave it at that. There is a huge gap between the 1Dx ($7500) and 5Dx ($3500). It's seems as though Canon is positioning a camera in the $5000-5500 range. Whatever that camera may be (I would suspect a 30+ MP, studio/wedding focused camera), it does seem like Canon does have a glaring hole in their lineup. Nikon has the D3x (studio camera), D4 (sports/wildlife camera) and D800 (entry level FF). With the direction Canon has taken, the 1Dx would compete with the D3x (which are comporable in price), and the 5Dx would compete with the D800. That only leaves the middle space to be filled, and I suspect that Canon has to be working on something, rather than leave it void. Thoughts?

I'm not sure we'll see anything positioned between the 5D and 1D series.

One thing though, the Nikon competitor to the 1Dx right now is the D4, not the D3x. The biggest difference between them is:

1Dx has slightly higher resolution (only 2 MPs)
1Dx has higher fps (14 vs 11 for the D4)

To me the 1Dx is a marginally better spec'd camera than the D4 which will probably be reflected by a slightly higher price. Canon hasn't officially announced a price for it yet, and I'd be surprised to see it over $6500 US.

Also, IMO with the introduction of the D800 there isn't much point getting a D3x. Maybe there's a D4x coming that will change things, although I don't know why they'd need it unless it had some big differentiators like being able to shoot at 11 fps.

I don't agree with this. Canon suggested a $6500 price for the camera in the announcements, and I have read that some people who have preordered the camera had their price raised to $7400. At this level, this puts the 1Dx in the 1DsMKIII territory and not the 1D MKV. To me, the price suggests that Canon is marketing this as their top tier camera.

OK, that may end up being true price-wise but price has nothing to do with what camera in the Nikon line-up it competes with. The 1Dx's Nikon competitor, at least for now, is the D4. The D3x is a much lower fps camera better suited for studio/landscape work.

IMO it's going to be hard for Canon to justify having the price of the 1Dx more than $500 US above the D4.

Canon is the industry leader. Sadly what this usually means, is they don't have to do anything.


That being said, here are my thoughts on this topic.

Before a camera is made, there needs to be a market for it. If you are going to make a $5,000 camera, it needs to not do what your $7,500 camera does, and it needs to do enough more then your $3,500 camera.

I am not sure what Canon can put between the 5D3 (as rumored), and the 1Dx, that will cause someone to shell out the additional $1,500 dollars, and at the same time, not lose Canon a 1Dx customer.

The 1DX only does 12FPS with Servo AF enabled and actually looking through the viewfinder.

14FPS comes with the mirror locked up, Single Shot AF (and I think also, it only shoots JPEG in this mode.) Sports shooters will love using this as a locked off remote camera.

maybe a 7Dx with increased fps, focusing, weather sealing, 1.6 crop..?

Canon WAS the industry leader. Unfortunately they think they still are, and we as consumers have to stump up for inferior products or re-invest elsewhere.

Actually, with the 1Dx and rumoured 5Dx, Canon will now have an action camera and a general-purpose camera, with nothing really geared towards for studio or landscape photographers (high resolution, good low-ISO performance, no need for high frame rate).

Actually, I'd say that the D3x belongs to the previous generation, and the three Nikon pro cameras are the D4 (action/photojournalis​m), D800 (landscape/studio) and likely D400 (crop sensor, fast frame rate wildlife/long telephoto camera). After all, the D800 has everything the D3x has, plus more - it's in no way an 'entry level' camera. Just that, with its pricing, Nikon has brought the D3x/1Ds-level cameras down to the $3000 price point, rather than $8000.

When I say industry leader, I mean in sales. I can't find anything that says they don't hold more of the market then any other manufacturer.
