Went out to the local park today and decided to give birds a go for a little bit with my new 300 f/4L...overall I think I did pretty well but I know there are things I can improve on and would like to get out there more to shoot birds. It was a lot of fun.

Very nice, the 300mm is a very useful lens. If you don't already have one, the 1.4x TC pairs very well with it giving a useful 420mm with AF and IS.

Thank you, yes I am very happy with it so far as it will mainly be for shooting sports.

Might have to look in to that, thank you!

They all look great to me. The 300 as intrigued me for a while. You just showed me again that it's worth it.

Drew,
Welcome to the bird forum.
I recognize you from the 60d thread.
your hockey stuff is great.
I like your bird stuff too.

I can make a few recommendations to you if you like.

1. get a 1.4 TC for your 300mm F4. it will make it a 420 f5.6 and will stay sharp and still focus quickly enough.
2. get down low for bird on water shots.
otherwise youre doing great.
you'll find you NEVER have enough reach doing bird stuff.
but youre great at action so you have a head up on most people starting out.:D

Thanks man and thank you for the recommendations! I am always up for learning from people that have been doing this more than me. Shooting things that move is my specialty but for right now I probably am not going to do too much bird shooting. I enjoy it but don't have the money to invest in birding gear on top of my sports gear haha

About the getting low, all of these were shot behind a chain link fence about waist high so thats as low as I could go, but duly noted for the next time!

That is a very nice start to your bird photography addiction Drew. You got some sweet "head shots" on those waterfowl.
As has been said, the 300/4 is a very capable birding lens; and when coupled w/the 1.4x TC II you'll have a lot of flexibility. I'm sure you'll enjoy the lens and the quest for better and better images. We'll be watching.....;)
