While photographing some different finches at a set up in my yard this bad boy arrived and perched on the perch I set up for the songbirds. I had 700mm of focal length on the camera and took 3 shots before he realized I was there...the first shot here is pretty much full frame and the next is a crop to reduce the oof shoulder that F9 gave me at this distance on this larger than expected visitor

Wow that is awesome. I just saw my first coopers on Friday at my local place and got an ok pic. Then today my girlfriend was outside talking ot the neighbor and our dogs were playing together when I walked outside without my camera of course and a big Coopers came and landed in the trees and as I turned to get my camera he flew off. So you got extra lucky. Are you using a blind? If so what is your setup like?

Crazy!
Even if you had the 1.4 TC off you still wouldn't have gotten more than 1/3 of him!

Great shots. Lovely eye detail. I'm usually annoyed by the subject being too far away.

Beautiful Gary, super detail and lovely colors. I'd say you had to wait awhile for your finches to return! :)

Usually only see a shot this close up if the bird is captive....I just love the eyes on these birds!

I'd say you made the most of an excellent opportunity, Gary! Also curious if you were hidden or out in the open but not moving around?
