This place is only about 2 miles south of Paige, AZ and a 3/4 mile easy walk off the road. Unfortunately, I'm terrified of heights and it's a thousand foot drop straight down with no guard rail. This is the best I could do :(

Nice shot, under the circumstances. Remember, it's not the fear of height you have, rather fear of falling. I have the same problem. Al

Have plenty of Canons, enough ammo, enough to blow 'em to "L". Now, I just have to learn to aim.

Nice effort, Ian. You might consider a fisheye or maybe a rail system. I saw one guy there crawl on his stomach to get close enough to shoot over the edge.

Thanks, folks. This was done with a 10mm and, believe me, I was lying on my stomach. I just couldn't get any closer and I was alone. I might have been able to pull it off if I had someone talking me through it. It's about a 5 hour drive from here. As the Terminator said ... "I'll be back" ...

I have the same problem. It took me about 45 minutes to get the the very edge. I would get as close as possible, draw a line in the sand, walk away, and come back later determined to get past the previous line. Acrophobia sucks when you're primarily a landscape photographer!

It's not the fear of falling...it's the fear of the sudden stop at the end!

I've been there a few times, and normally walk right out to the edge (I used to be a rock climber). The last time I went, on my way back to the car, I read the sign stating that there may be nothing under the rock I'm standing on, and it could break away. Now I'm not so sure I'll be so carefree. Ignorance was bliss... ;-)a

Nothing to be embarrassed about...had to do the same thing myself. A storm was blowing in during my visit, and the wind gusts were above 40mph at the rim. Had to lay down and overhang the edge of the rim since I was shooting with a fisheye, and the wife was sitting on my legs just to make sure that I didn't take the truck keys with me to the bottom. Ended up with a very cool shot, though. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get the shot...

Mine would have probably just kept the car keys in her pocket. If she had been there, she wouldn't have been able to get close enough to sit on my legs. We're a sorry pair ...

Great shot. It illustrates the way MANY people feel up there. The combination of height and wind can make it a bit exciting. Here's a link to a shot of me standing right on the edge 3hrs. after sunset with a full moon at my back. I had to stand still for 8 sec. with very strong winds. You can tell I was using my tripod for a little support. I actually felt more comfortable at night than during the day. I think the danger is part of what makes this area so spiritual and exciting. I hope posting this link is ok. I didn't want to put the picture on your post but I thought it tied in to the topic well. :)

OMG, Brett! It was all I could do to crawl as far as I did on my belly. I can't even imagine setting up on a tripod! Kudos to you (or are those little men in white coats I see heading your way?)! BTW, I followed your link back to your Smugmug and saw the image you got -- nothing short of outstanding!
