Ian, my shots from Horseshoe Bend look remarkably similar to yours! I couldn't get to the edge either. In fact, I think you may have gotten closer than I did!

just lean over the edge:

You could just get a large tripod and take a photo without getting to the edge, if you are afraid of heights.

It's not the fear of falling...it's the fear of the sudden stop at the end!

Amen, brother.

I couldn't get much closer to the edge myself. Still a nice shot.

I know that feeling but I fought it off to slowly crawl on my bellie to the edge.

LOL I crawled on my stomach to the very edge, then stuck my arms out getting the camera further out. I was so worried about the drop I forgot to bracket my shots, but was able to get what i wanted in the end. I want to go again, but not if I could stomach it again. Someone fell off the cliff just two weeks before I was there.

Funny thing I found is not getting to the edge, but backing away on your stomach was harder. I also made sure no one was within 100' of me when I crawled out.

I was there tonight at sunset and I was more scared of the other photographers then the heights. What a rabid surly bunch I kept looking around to make sure no one would push me!. I am off to upper antelope tomorrow.

Have a great time! I hope you plan to do lower antelope too! I'm going to do the antelopes next time I'm up that way and will try Horseshoe Bend again (after seeing someone for a Valium script, I think).

Hang over the edge, extend the arms, press the shutter...no big deal ;)

Great shot. It illustrates the way MANY people feel up there. The combination of height and wind can make it a bit exciting. Here's a link to a shot of me standing right on the edge 3hrs. after sunset with a full moon at my back. I had to stand still for 8 sec. with very strong winds. You can tell I was using my tripod for a little support. I actually felt more comfortable at night than during the day. I think the danger is part of what makes this area so spiritual and exciting. I hope posting this link is ok. I didn't want to put the picture on your post but I thought it tied in to the topic well. :)

Wow, my hands are sweating just looking at that photo. I'll probably make a trip out there in a few years but I don't if I can ever get to the edge. Maybe I'll bring a thick rope and tie it to something.

argyle -- I think you need to go out a little further and try again. There's a bit of stone jutting out in the FG of your photograph that obscures a bit of the bend :p

I think its interesting how the colors are completely different on all of these images. Its amazing how the light works up there.
