White Lightning / Alien Bees

This is the same company as 'White Lightning", right? Any difference between White Lightning and Alien Bees? Is that a distinct quality difference between the two?

They're both Paul C Buff companies (or something like that). I think there's a WL that's more powerful, they have metal bodies, and the fan has a thermostat. There are probably other differences too, they just like a step up from what i've read. Not having cartoons on them might be an advantage for some people.

The most crucial differences are the modeling light & build quality:
The WL has a 250 watt modeling lamp, the AB is 100 watts upgradable to 150. Makes a big difference. Also, the White Lightning has a 5 year warranty vs. AB 2 years. The White Lightning 1600 has a 1/4 power mode which gives you both 1 stop more light than an AB 800, and also 1 stop less. I have a WL 1600 for my main light, and ABs for the rest to save money & weight.

That's a good idea. Never thought of that. How does this setup work for you?

Don't forget your modelling lights might not be proportional if you use a WL and ABs together. This might not be important to everyone.

I can vouch for the quality of that White Lightning 3200. I've used it a good amount and it's marvelous. It doesn't come cheap though. =)
