I have just bought a jupiter 9 85mm f2 ...

It ia a PORTRAIT LENS up to f4 and a good performer above that.

Alwev, this is all good news my friend. My 135mm is a lovely lens and I cannot imagine being more pleased had I bought the 135mm Canon ... though I would be much poorer had I done that of course ;-)a Very good news on the Jupi 85mm too ... the qualities you describe are exactly what I bought it for.

It becomes fully sharp at f5.6 but f4 is only just behind it.

I find it not too shabby myself at f/2.8 ... if I manage to focus it correctly, that is :o

This was one of my best results with the lens so far:

Shutter speed: 1/800 sec
Aperture: 2.8
Exposure compensation: +2/3
Flash: Off
ISO: 400
Focal length: 85,0mm
Crop, resized, USM applied

Best regards,
Andy

some cameras, some lenses,
and still a lot of things to learn...
(so post processing examples on my images are welcome :D)

I have the jupiter-9 which I am going to sell soon. Man what a piece of glass. It's huge. But looks just fine on my 350D. Built like a tank. Wide open these lenses are a little soft. At 2.8 it's better, and gets tack sharp at f4. It also has like 15 blades which makes the boken creamy. Mine is 1991 model. So it does not have the nubby focus ring, which I think is good.

I have just received the lens. It´s a MC exportation version, built it in 1988. It´s in mint condition.

Firsts test shots I am pleased, specially for portraits, for the DOF. It´s no easy at first instance to get in focus, you must get familiar with it. As a manual lens, you see directly trough the viewfinder all the time like if you have always pressed the DOF buttom (I have a Canon 350D). So darker with big f´s (closed diaphragm)

The lens it´s soft at f/2 and better 2 stops down. But the bokeh it´s pretty good wide open and also a feeling of glow/dreaming in the DOF areas.

I have to compensate -1 2/3 EV all the time outside in a sunny day. It works at Av and Manual. I can see flare at shinning parts & light highlights. (This is for now the most important drawback)

I did a comparation today at home, shoting to a picture in the wall of my dinningroom, between this lens and the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L USM at 85mm f/4. I was very surpraised for the result, the Jupiter did perform pretty well at f/2, so it was sharp.

I have to learn more and get an adaptation to it, but I have got best results than I would expect in this first approuch.

Cheers

Cheers
Juan

The Jup 9 is a must have really. I'll second eveything that was said, f2 is soft on purpose it seems, since it becomes very sharp by f4.
I haven't tried the multicoated version, only the older ones; no issue whatsoever. The "funny" apperture system is called "preset", it's actualy a lot easier to use that on a DSLR, since you can do the focus wide open -> metering/shooting stopped down while still having the camera on your eye. It's quite handy !

Also, that lens is very small, it's about the size of a bigger 50mm lens. All in all a very good lens, one of the "hidden gems" of M42s...

I've got a few test shots there : http://galleries.oomz.net/pub/M42/russian/jup9/ (external link)
