Your photos are excellent, Kevin. But what you have shown, especially for the later 2 photos, is that lighting does more for the final picture than what sensors can do. Especially the quality of lighting, and not just the quantity.

Good work!

Hi guys... I just upgraded, from the 550D, and these are the first images I've tried with the 7D. I normally shoot raw/manual, but was playing around to get used to where everything was and all....

dunno, it's been a while since I was last into cycling—one expensive hobby at a time and all that. On MTBs I used shimano SPDs, but I was not terribly demanding on them, not getting them muddy and all, and eventually I moved on to a road bike and the Look system.

in the first picture, there is not enough detail in the shadow region—you're asking too much of the sensor to properly expose for sky and ground. Solutions include tripod-ing it and making a HDR, or using a filter kit with a gradient ND filter. Seeing as those options were closed, I think I would have tried to make use of the 8fps continuous mode to take a series of 3 pictures, and hope for a steady hand to get 3 exposure bracketed pictures to line up enough for an HDR.

Compositionally, the first shot suffers from a lack of focal point—what are we supposed to be looking at, and the trees in the foreground are distracting. Colour wise, there's not enough saturation and colour—I would probably have waited a little while for the sun to get closer to the horizon before trying again.

As Alfredo mentioned, the second image is blur and suffers from motion blur. A tripod would have fixed it.

Thanks again to both of you for the feedback! Lots to learn!!!
