Panning. My first try.

Not sharp enough, but I kind of like it. Wanted to show the speed of these things driving 80 km an hour. :)

Hi, this is my first post on POTN. Thought I might start my time here by sharing some floral pictures I took at a flower auction a while back.

I'm new to photography; your critique/feedback is welcomed :D

I love the red rose with the black background. Focusing further back towards the centre would have improved it even more.

Panning is tough. I don't know if the 17-55 supports auto panning... some IS lenses will have auto panning and some will have an IS mode #2; all this does is eliminate up and down movement while you pan horizontally (or it will eliminate horizontal movements when you pan vertically- it will detect which one you are going for and automatically compensate.)

Here is a photo of my dog. I used the 70-300 in IS mode #2 and I tried to pan with her. I used 1/50th of a second vs you using 1/10th of a second. My dog is definitely not going 80 kph so I think you could shorten the shutter and still get great blur on your photos. This is the only shot that turned out remotely close to what I wanted... sharp head with blurry legs and tail. Its a shame because her face is in the shadows :(

People used to do this without any IS so it can be done. Keep at it :)

EDIT: I just looked at the 17-55 users manual and ther is no auto-panning. You might be better off if you turned the IS off for this type of shot.

A flower auction? What the heck is that? Wonderful shots the color depth of the flowers over the black background really make then stand out. Are they presented like that?

Do you have any shots with a higher aperture where the whole flower is in focus?

Thank you.
I agree, I don't really know why I focused on the pedals

Haha! I believe a flower action is a place where florist from the city gather and start bidding for flowers? I've never seen so many flowers; row after row after row of flowers. I should have taken more but I was worried it wasn't allowed :(

Several flowers of the same kind were kept in one bucket. I tried to just frame one flower in the shot but had to photoshop out a few distractions.

Sadly, no. I didn't try a higher aperture but I should have ...
