EF-S lenses do not create an image circle big enough to fill up a full frame sensor. EF lenses do, but on a crop sensor you'll only be using the middle part of the image circle, which is where the 1.6 factor effective focal length comes from...

For the most part, people around here are pretty great, but there are those who are convinced that full frame is the only way to go. You can use any lens on a 7D; it really is a great camera. I wanted full frame, but I'm considering picking up a 7D again sometime.

Actually.. an L lens will probably benefit a crop camera even more than a full frame. Full frame is less demanding on lens due to the pixel density.
