I have had my 60D for about 9 months now and have recently added a Canon 100-400. I have not had any issues until yesterday when I attached my 100-400. I switched the camera on it came up with f00 error. I checekd to be sure the lens was locked into place and switched the camera off and on a few times with no change. I then removed the lens, checked the contacts and reattached. When I switched the camera back on the aperature showed correctly and no other problems occured throughout the day. Is there anything else I could check or wait and see if it occurs again before the warranty period expires? Thanks for any suggestions.

99% chance the lens wasn't seated properly. I've had it happen before on my own 100-400L, fix is simply to power off, detach, re-attach. If you sent it in for warranty repair I highly doubt they would find anything wrong with the lens.

I found this with a search:

Experienced the same thing with my 24-105L when shooting a wedding.

No need to mention I panicked a little, because the camera locked up completely..

Tried everything: shuutting off the camera, taking out the battery etc, but I noticed trying to 'move' the mounted lens had an effect.

I did a search on this forum: The lens is clearly not communicating properly with the body, and there were basically two possibilities:
The IS - unit is broken. ( not the problem in your case)
The contacts are dirtry.

I cleared the contacts with a pencil eraser (as someone suggested on this forum).

The lens is working flawless ever since.
Hope this works for you too, good luck!

I am pretty sure that was the case.
Lens is in place but somehow contacts don't make it properly with the camera.

probably the contacts, do not use a pencil eraser to clean them.

Warning: do not clean lens contacts on either a Canon lens or the camera body with an eraser! It’s incredibly easy to rub off the gold plating on these contacts, and end up with data communication problems, even if that wasn’t the original source of the problem! It’s obviously a good idea to clean the contacts if a lens communication error is reported, but our strong recommendation is to use a soft, clean cloth, perhaps moistened with isopropyl alcohol if you feel the contacts are smudged with fingerprint oil or similar debris and really need a cleaning agent. Again, do not use anything abrasive, and to repeat: do not use an eraser!

Thanks for the input... Kinda puts my mind at ease a bit. I'll clean the contacts and give it a go..

It does sound like a poorly seated lens, or maybe a software glitch. It's something to keep in mind but if it is no longer happening, I wouldn't dwell on it. Single errors can happen, it's when it starts happening with consistency that you have to be concerned.

if anything the gold hinders the connection as its not as conductive as the base metal under it. the gold doesn't corrode or oxidize easily, that's why it is used to plate the connections on all sorts of things as opposed to using a much more conductive material such as silver or copper. rubbing off the gold wont hurt the contacts other than you may have to clean them a lot more often.

 The manufacturer doesn't seem to agree with you.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

I've seen WAY too many photographers mistreat their lenses ie throwing them in the camera bag without any caps on them, bumping\banging them against other lenses in the bag, etc. I'm not sure if this is the case with you but I have never had this problem with any lens and I've been using DSLR's now for 7 years. I always take that extra second or two to make sure that rear cap is in place and instinctively when I am done using a lens I'll pop on the front lens cap as well. This should help keep contacts and glass clean 99.9% of the time. Do I get dust on my lenses. Yes indeed. But that's about all I get on my lens glass.
