Just about ready to buy the SX40, which I plan to carry with the Canon hood, UV and CP filters (I know hood and filters can't be used simultaneously), extra battery, extra card(s), and 270 EXII flash. I'll be spending 3 weeks in Europe this summer and just don't want to lug along my 5D MarkII with 3 lenses.

For the SX 40, I'm leaning heavily toward a waist pack that can also be used with a shoulder strap. Now leaning toward the Tamrac Rally 56 or the Lowepro Photo Runner 100. I think these would each allow me to carry the camera with its own strap attached. I DON'T want anything that merely holds the camera snugly, with no room for the accessories I mentioned.

I'd welcome suggestions.

Check out Domke's F5XA - full-length slot for a belt, includes a shoulder strap and a great size for the camera, hood, flash and filter. I use it when I take out my SX-1 rather than the EOS cameras.

Here's what Lowepro recommends for the SX40 HS specifically from their line (using the site's Bagfinder feature):

Both of the suggestions above would have given me something, and I appreciate both replies. I've since realized that I'm really looking for a travel bag, in which I can put everything from tickets and keys to manuals, magazines, wallet and tickets--as well as the SX40 with its filters, Op/Tech wrist strap, cheat sheet, you might say "the whole enchilada." So I've ordered this Tamrac bag from B&H:

Among other things, it has the advantage of not looking like a camera bag.
Thanks, guys, for your input. I hope I won't be sending the Tamrac back.

Floyd

I have a Lowepro Passport Sling for my sx40. It holds the camera, my circular polarizer, closeup filter, mini binoculars, and a small monopod along with extra sd cards, and a spare battery. It has an expanding rear section that I can fit a light jacket or rain pancho in if needed. It is the best solution I have found out of the dozen or so bags I have tried for a travel bag.

The reviews mention pockets without any closure on the Lowepro, so I'm sticking with the Tamrac I mentioned earlier. But I would like to know which "small monopod" you use for travel.

The monopod I have is a "Quantaray QSX Compact Monopod" from Ritz. It is not very expensive and I have read reviews that say it sucks but I have been careful with mine and it has served me well for several years now.

It is true that the small side pockets on the Passport sling are open but all you can really put in them is something like a note pad, map or brochure. I keep a trash bag in mine to use as a rain cover and thats about it. There is one end pocket that is large enough to put a water bottle in. I keep everything else in the main section which is zippered. Good luck with your new bag.
