This guy was very skittish and wouldn't sit still when he saw me. He kept leaping to the other side of the tree when I tried to take his picture. This is hand held and not very sharp, but I'm sure someone can help me with the ID.

Neither :) It's a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Neither the Hairy or Downy have a forward, red cap like that. Theirs are both at the back of the head instead.

Too funny. That is what I originally ID'd him as on my Facebook photo album but then second guessed myself. I should have gone with my instinct! Thanks for confirming it for me. Hope to get a better shot of him. He comes back quite often. Maybe he'll get used to seeing me staring at him!

Thanks for the link and reminder that he's a she! Now I know the difference between Downey and Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, and the difference between male and female sapsuckers. Good learning experience.

Aren't some of the names of birds stupid? I thought we had some bad ones in the UK (e.g. Great tits) but yellow bellied sapsucker? That sounds like an insult
No offence meant, but you'd think whoever named it could have done better, pretty bird as well :)
