24L II front focuses on 7D, OK on 5DII

Hi everyone -

I recently picked up a 24LII and I was having a blast with it on my 5DII. Then, I stuck it on my 7D and I'm disappointed to find that it is having major focusing issues. At closer focusing distances, I can achieve reasonable focus by f2.8 and micro adjust 20 but this throws off focusing at longer distances. Besides, who buys a 1.4 lens to use at 2.8? In order to just cut to the chase, lets just assume I know what front focusing is and I know how to test for it...the lens is definitely showing serious front focusing.

So, my question is how this is even possible? My 7D is fine with my other lenses and the 24L is fine on my 5DII so its just a bit baffling. Any home remedies I can try before sending it off to Canon? I'm hesitant to send it off to Canon with my 7D anyway - what if they fix it with the 7D and it comes back not working on the 5DII - is this a possibility?

Thanks for your insight everyone!

How odd, mine back focuses a centimeter on my 450d. And like you I have the same dilemma.

The 7D has lens micro adjust. You can set a correction for it on the 7D and it will only do it on that particular lens.

ETA: Gah, just re-read your OP and you've tried that. Sorry!

Bread with THIS issue? Interesting...

But yes, I too remember at least two other threads on it. Thats three threads too many for a very expensive lens. And I too want to use one on a 7D.....

Yeah, Wonder bread front focuses horribly with my toaster... but works fine with my sandwiches... Rye works fine with the toaster and sandwiches thankfully... My toaster is too old to have toast-adjustment.. It really sucks with large-aperture bread

Anyways..

That really sucks..

I'd call Canon about it, Explain the situation to them, They'll probubly advise you on what the best option is, They may ask to have the lens, 7D and 5DII to make sure they get it working right on all three

So, I just created a work order on the Canon website. It asked for the Serial Number and purchase date - I entered the serial number and my purchase date, 2/20/2012. However, I bought the lens used so the date I entered is not the original purchase date.

But, the online estimated bill came back "under warranty". This was a bit unexpected for me since I bought it used - does this seem right?

They're apparently taking the date you entered as the original purchase date for the lens. I assume there was no entry for "new" or "used."

Yah, I figured. I ended up calling them and they'll provide an estimate when the lens gets there. They are convinced the problem is with my 7D and not the lens even though all my other lenses work fine on the 7D.
