I've done a little digging but can't really find a good answer anywhere so here goes...

I've got a wedding coming up at the end of March and I need to rent a wide angle for a couple of shots I've got rolling around in my head (the church is very close to the street and I'll need something wider than 24 to get the bride with the whole steeple in the background). I'm using my 1D3 and 40D and I'm at a toss up for which option would be best.

Option 1: Canon EF-S 10-22 f3.5-4.5 on the 40D

Option 2: Sigma 12-24 f4-5.6 II on the 1D3

Any thoughts or recommendations from those who have experience with both would be appreciated. I'm leaning towards the 10-22 because it has the same 77mm thread size as my 24-105 and 70-200 (the sigma can't take filters). I could use my existing polarizer outside and it's a Canon so hopefully I won't have to worry about focusing issues. I just didn't know if the Sigma had anything better to offer in terms of image quality (some of their new lenses have really been on point). I'll be using lensrentals.com (not that it really matters). Thanks in advance.

What about a sigma 10-20mm on the 40d! It is cheaper than the canon, and it is an excellent lens for the money! I love mine on my previous 60d!

I'm not looking to purchase, just rent. The cost difference between each model is minimal enough that I'm more concerned with having the best image quality. I understand that no UWA lens is ideal for portraits, but I really don't have a way around it for a couple of the shots I need to get.

If you are renting, why not rent one of the wide angle prime!

I hadn't thought of that... I wonder if the 14mm f2.8L II would be wide enough???

I have some more thinking to do :)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Mike,
How's the Tokina's performance at f2.8?

Many commented that the 11 16 @ 16 2.8 is to be considered a prime

Definitely go with a prime, imost will have less distortion and give better IQ than UWA zooms.

I use the Canon 20/2.8 a lot. It's a very nice lens.

Actually, though, for a shot like that a Tilt-Shift might help stop some of the perspective keystoning effect you'll get with the tall building. However, it will only be able to correct for some of it... not all. No lens can have enough movement to fully correct shooting up close to a tall building like that. The 17/4L is the widest.

The widest avail. prime is the 14/2.8.
